SEEG vs. 103" Limited
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:41:53 PM »

Folks,
I am toying with the idea of trading my 05' and moving up to a 2011 Ultra Limited. I noticed in another thread that the engines are not the same; which I was not aware of.

My concern is how will the 103" limited engine compare to what I am used to in the SEEG. Performance wise, I've added a race tuner and prior dyno results were 94 HP and 99.5 ft. lbs of torque.

Looking at HD website, they show the limited 103" as having 102 ft. lbs. of torque.
SO, with that said, I guess I'm confused as to the difference in the two motors. Am I overlooking something here ?  :nixweiss:

Your guidance is appreciated.

I have a friend with a 10, limited.  Very nice bike, the new frame bigger rear tire and everything they did makes it a much better riding & handling MC than my 06 SE.  However, the Limited 103 does not compare to my SE 103.  & I am talking about when my 103 was just stage 1.  My SE 103 made 94 hp & 101 torque with SE slip on's Air Cleaner & Dyno work.

The Limited 103 has the Fullsac X-Pipe, CVO mufflers with the Fullsac 1 3/4" baffles and the TTS with the Fullsac Map.  It runs really well & I would be happy with it, but it is not a SE 103.  Seat of the pants comparison I would say it makes ~88hp and maybe 94lbs Tq.

If I didn't have either & I took both out for a test ride I believe I would pick the 10 Limited over the 06 SE.  The ride & handling for me overshadow the differnece in the 103's

Dude,

Your 2005 103" motor is a bored and stroked version of the 88 cubic inch motor. The 103" in the Limited is a bored out version of the newer, 96" motor.  Don't forget that the HD numbers are at the crank.  Your numbers from the dyno were at the wheel. There would be at least a 15 percent difference in the two sets of numbers.  How the two engines compare will depend on what you intend to do to the stock Limited motor.  That is always a question of money.

Money though begs another question.  I have a couple of friends who bought the Limited instead of a CVO because of their concern with the 110" motor. By the time they finished upgrading their Limiteds, however, they had spent CVO money.  If you're thinking about the Limited, do think about how much you intend to put into it. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I would agree with Greg.  My friend has put a LOT of money in the Limited to get it where it is.  It does not have the crome, paint, bells & whistles of the new CVO.  He probably has easily put $6 or $7k + into it & he still says, maybe I should have just bought a new CVO.

Hogdude,

We have an 11 Ultra Limited as well as an 04/05 SEEG.  Ride/Handling, as well as creature comfort items go to the new 11, but the limited is a dog in comparison to the SEEGS in regards to tq/hp.

I knew I had this somewhere.  Steve at Fullsac sent me this when I was doing the Limited 103 for my friend.

There is a lot more to this than just the the CVO103 versus the PowerPak 103.  First, the Limited is heavier than the older CVO.  Second, the gear ratios are different and are skewed more to cruising versus acceleration.  So even if you achieved the same engine output, the old CVO103 should outrun the new bike in a stop light gran prix.  Of course, I'm not so sure drag strip times should be the top consideration when purchasing a TOURING motorcycle.

On the plus side, the new style frame is a big improvement over the earlier models in terms of handling and stability.  And the new bikes offer more electronic gadgets and things like ABS braking as well as closed loop fuel injection if those sorts of things interest you.

If you are seriously interested in the Limited, consider a gear ratio change (30 tooth trans output sprocket) to regain the performance lost to the weight gain and gear ratio changes.  Much better in terms of reliability than internal engine mods or 110's, IMHO.

Thanks for the response, Jerry.  Agreed, I guess I should take the drag strip mentality out of the equation, since the primary reason will be for touring, more comfortable 2 up riding, etc.

I will definitely keep the gear ratio issue in mind. (clipping to evernote now for future reference).  :2vrolijk_21:
