« on: September 12, 2012, 07:06:22 PM »

Had my bike into the local indy for some minor mods and he calls me says my rear pads need replacing so I go to the shop because Im in disbelief  with only 2K on my bike.  Sure enough the outside pad is really worn Im like WTF?  Anybody else have a similar experience ?

Which is it?  You unintentionally ride the rear brake or is the caliper not relaxing enough to keep from wearing the pads?

Does the rotor show signs of being hot?  If pads are shot at only 2k miles a hot rotor wouldn't suprise me.

X2 with twolaneriders comments, you have other issues at play.  New pads at 2K miles is a problem.  Sure you trust your indy?

How much exactly is "really worn"?  Is there 1/16" of friction material remaining, 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", or what?  Minimum thickness per Harley is 1/32" if I remember correctly, but I always consider 1/16" the minimum myself.

The only way I can imagine a brake pad actually being worn to the wear limit in 2000 miles would be if that brake was always engaged, either due to constantly riding the brake or a defect in the brakes that never lets the pressure be released on the pad.  If one pad is severely worn and the other looks like new, then I'd be looking to see if the caliper was correctly assembled and aligned.  I believe the rear caliper on the Softails is still the old style two piston floating caliper.  If the part that's supposed to slide on the pins doesn't move properly, most of the wear will be on one pad.

Anyhow, if the outer pad is truly worn out at 2000 miles, I wouldn't just let your indy throw a new set of pads in the caliper and go on your way.  If you are absolutely certain beyond any doubt that you haven't been riding the brake, you may want to contact your dealer about warranty coverage because something isn't right.

With the last few posts, something else is up.  I guess it is good they spotted it, however wouldn't expect it to be your cost.  You would have to be riding it harder then two squirrels in spring.

The Harley pads are about half the thickness of automobile pads.  Thought mine were bad on my 08 Ultra SE3 after about 10K miles, purchased new pads and turns out they were only barely worn after measuring the new pads and comparing them to the old pads.
