New to HD,

Pricing depends on where you are - labor rates vary widely across the country.  I've seen prices here in the Midwest from $200 to $280 for a 1k service, but I imagine the Northeast and California would be higher due to higher labor rates.

If you are comfortable doing it yourself, figure 4 qts motor oil, 1 qt trans lube, and 1 qt primary lube at approximately $8 per quart; 1 primary inspection cover gasket at approx $3.50, 2 drain plug "O" rings @ maybe $.50.  Other than a little cable lube, the rest is all labor.

You need to shop around. I took mine to one place and they wanted to charge me over $400, than I called two other places and I had quotes from $230- 260. Since my bike was already at the place for 400 I called the service manager and asked him why they were over charging for the job. That the book lists it at 2.7 hours of labor. I got it for that labor price but will never take it there again.

It sounds like what the dealers charge for the "service" but it's definitely not right considering what they do. Do it yourself & save $300  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] ;)

I would talk to the dealer before I did my own 1K service. If I not mistaken, this service has to be done by a HD certified mechanic to keep your Warranty intact.
I do my own servicing, and with a little help and experience, anybody can, but make sure this won't void your warranty.
After the first service, buy a service manual and roll your own. You'll sleep better knowing it's done right and you will learn a lot about your bike. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I read through my owners manual before doing the 1k myself and didn't see any requirement for the dealer to accomplish this service to maintain a valid warranty. I kept all my receipts for items purchased to complete the service.
It would be interesting to hear the responses you'd get if you asked 10 service managers the same question. ;)

I took mine in for the 1K cuz I was going to maggie valley the following week and did not want to take any chances. I did the 5k myself and for the 10k I changed  the fluids, and plugs and took it in for a partial service to have the belt, cam chain, Clutch and other items done. Most of all you need to feel comfortable. You may want to go that route. change the fluids and have them finish it.

While many Harley dealers seem to be telling people they have to bring the bike back for the 1k service, this is in fact not true.  As long as you keep receipts for the materials as proof, you can do your own maintenance and it will not affect your warranty (the only thing it will affect is your dealer's profits).  Search the site or the web for the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, a Federal law regulating warranties.  This act spells out what a manufacturer can and cannot require, among other things.  Personally, I make my own check sheet for all the required items, note the mileage and date, and sign it.  This is kept with the receipts for the oil, filter, etc.

If you do it yourself make sure you keep the receipt where you brought the oil and filter.

[smiley=banana.gif]Well I lucked out...I called my buddy up at Goe HD and told him I needed to get it done before I left for a trip and once again he came through for me. He worked it in, and only charged me $250. I know that I probably could have saved the extra $150 on labor but hey...he's gotta clear his overhead too right!

Anyway I am going to have them perform the 1K and then I will do the rest from there, this way I know that I am covered for the first service and I also had a paint issue that I wanted him to look at...it isnt the same kind of paint issue that has been discussed on the board. This looked like some sort of flaw in the glass rather than a flaw in the paint...anyway they say they are going to call HD to see what can be done.

I live here in the Houston Texas area and i must say GOE HD is the place to be...the other dealers here in town SUCK! I dont mind telling you that Mancuso HD is the worst bunch of used car salesmen I have ever dealt with in my life and I will never set foot in thier doors again. I know that they can charge a little more because of the market they have but damn $450 vs. $250 for a 1K service? that sounds rediculous to me!!! Anyway, I have a LONG list of complaints for them but I have already posted them with HD.

Thanks guys, this board is absolutely priceless  ;D

That is a good fair price [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]. Are you getting the regular or SYN oil? I prefer the syn oil myself.

I am getting the SYN, I was told that you HAD to run the SYN in the 103. I believe that is correct since it comes from the factory with SYN and once you run SYN you cant go back to regular. My COrvette and Mercedes are the exact same way, they both came with Mobile 1 and once you run it you cant swithc back...at least its not a good thing to do so I have been told.
