WANNA RIDE ! ! ! !
« on: May 09, 2006, 10:36:53 AM »

 [smiley=worthless.gif]

I need your opinion...

My bike is due for its 1K mile service since I have 915 miles on it but I am planning a trip Friday for about 350 miles and my stealer cant get to it until next week? Any thoughts on holding off until about 1350 miles?? After investing $33K in a bike I dont want to have any problems and since I am new to HD I am not sure how important it is to nail dow the service at exactly 1k miles. Of course I will check all of the fluilds before my trip and make sure that everything is in top running order but hell, with only a thousand miles it better be in top running order!! Hey New to HD,

I could be all wet, but to me that first oil change is the most important.  Its the one that gets all the chips and manufacturing debris out.  I would think getting it done as early as 500 when the break-in is done is better than later.  But with my machines I tend to be very conservative.

Not one of those "ride it like ya stole it" guys.  I'm sure someone will disagree, BUT...

Sorry, I know thats now what you wanted to hear..

I agree, the sooner the better. My advise is to go and buy a manual, change the fluids yourself and the job will be right!

Enjoy your ride!

If I remember right it is in the owners manual. If you have never done it before I would suggest having some one assist you. Or ask TwoLane to make up an oil change for dummies [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I knoew that is what you would say, I will stop by the stealer and see if they have a manual. Will the manual tell me what they were going to do in the 1K service? Should I still take it back to them for the service after I return from my trip this weekend?

All of my previous bikes have been Yamaha or Honda and I must admit my attitude towards them was ride it like you stole it, however my out of pocket expense was much easier to accept if I had any problems. I also have taken on a new attitude with this bike...this is my baby and I treat her with kid gloves...I want to make sure everything is right before jumping on for a full 400 mile day!

Maybe you can help me with something else, I switched to V&H slip ons after 500 miles and then took it to my dealer for the SERT map...since then I have noticed my pipes turning blue...is it running too rich!

The manual will give you a chart of all of the service requirements and the intervals. I believe this is in the owners manual as well. If you are comfortable doing all of the items than I see no reason to have the dealer go over it again. Save your receipts for the items you purchase for the service so you have proof that it was done.

Pipes will blue over time but usually not the mufflers. There are many factors that affect this such as chrome quality, heat etc.

Did the dealer load a "canned" map into the SERT or did they build a map on the dyno?

Since Twolane is in the wind on his trip, and a quick search didn't get me to where the picture is you describe I'll post it again.

The manual will give you a break down of everything for all your services (it will be in your owners manual also). Depending on how mechanically inclined you are and having the right tools. W/O looking at manual I believe it's mostly fluid changes and minor adjustments and mainly checking things. If you feel comfortable doing all this service no sense in taking it to dealer, as it would have been done. You may want to document mileage; date services was done, and keep receipts for your fluids and any other parts (gaskets, etc) you purchase for this service for your records.

I did my initial service at 1300 miles. No problems. Some owners are more particular than others but for me 300 miles isn't a big deal. I would recommend you check your drive belt for the correct play before the trip. They can do some initial stretching. Other than that, as long as it's running good and you're not experiencing any problems..... enjoy your trip and do the service when you get back.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I agree... DIY is the best if you have the skill set and tools. Probably the most difficult part of the 1k service is checking to ensure that all the critical fasteners torque is correct. This requires at least 2 torque wrenches as there are settings for inch pounds and foot pounds with varied values. The critical fasteners are identified in the shop manual.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The most important items on the 1000 mile service are the fluid changes, the primary chain adjustment, and the drive belt adjustment.  The rest of the items are basically just checks to make sure nothing came loose from improper torque at original assembly, cable adjustments, etc.  A few hundred miles over the 1k won't make any major difference.  As noted above, before making a 400 mile trip it would be prudent to do a full visual inspection, check the rear belt play, check fluid levels, etc.

Unfortuantely I had the canned "race" cert done...since I was new I didnt know any better, now I am thinking that having a tuner installed and a custom map on the dyno is the way to go.

I feel comfortable enough with the fluids and I certainly have all of the right tools...I may just do it myself! I just called the dealer again since I know the owner (he is a freind of the family)...he said he would go check with the service guys to see what he could do to get it in...although I had a little sticker shock when I heard the price from the service manager $413.00! ! ! Does this sound right?
