So, if the cooling system can hold head temps down to say 200F  +/- 15F , what tuning opportunities might we see ?
(those are the temps my CBR1000RR ran most of the time)

all the downsides of water cooling,
i.e. complexity, cost and weight,
but not the superior cooling allowing high sustained HP/TQ in the heat.

+1

Either rock the water cooling or don't.

Question: "Is it water cooled?"
Answer: "Well... kinda..."

To give you an idea what LC can bring,
the Suzuki 1800 cc twin has 125 hp at the crank.
A stock CVO 110 has around 84 at the crank.

Both totally stock and emission and noise compliant.

Yes, but the Suzuki is an oversquare 7500 RPM engine too... It's not all from water cooling.

Actually:

Compared to a Night Rod at only 1250cc....

Still impressed with the Suzuki???

The Suzuki 1800 deliver 125 hp@6200 rpm, 160 Nm@ 3200 Rpm (factory figures)
The CVO fat bob deliver 84 hp@ 5000 Rpm, 135 Nm @ 4000. (factory figures)

And we all know the problems associated with the 110 motor.
There are no such problems with the Suzuki 1800 motor.

Still impressed with air cooling?

At the crank for both. The Suzuki loses 15% through the driveshaft.

Absolutely! 1800cc, air cooled, 136 HP @ 6000 RPM and 142 ft-lbs @ 4250 RPM at the rear wheel.
That's Triumph Rocket III power from a V-Twin that's 500cc smaller.... runs on pump gas, doesn't run hot, and gets 45 MPG.

But its not EPA compliant, emission or noise.

My example below shows the handicap that air cooling has compared with LC.
(unless you are saying American engineers are not as good as their Japanese competitors, I am not saying that)

Granted. But in stock form at 100 cubic inches it made 75/92 at the tire and didn't burn the rider.

Oh no... water cooling is definitely an advantage. That little Porche engine in the V-Rod is a testament to that. With emissions getting more strict every year it's only a matter of time before they're ALL water cooled. The manufacturers really have no choice. How long do you reckon it'll be before air cooled engines go the way of the Dodo? Before 2015?

I wasn't trying to be a jackass. I have ridden a few M-109Rs and that bike is swell... but after the initial swelling goes down I wouldn't want to live with that bike day-to-day. Heavy, awkward, sound like crap, and require valve adjustments too. None for me, thanks.

Water cooling...more power-- probably..but can the crankshaft of a 110" take it :nervous:

I would bet money that HD is already working on a completely new water cooled powerplant. They are really good at keeping secrets. We won't know it until they get it certified.

CARB filing just shows the 96 motor in the Dyna's, the 103 standard in the Softails and Touring models, and the 110 in the 4 CVO bikes.   CVO Ultra, SG, Convertible and RoadGlide Custom.
