Intake Suggestions
« on: July 08, 2011, 09:39:12 AM »

New member with recent purchase of 2008 SE Road King.  Bike has V&H true duals, but appears to have stock filter.  The bike came with SE tuner cable and VCI box, but no software.  I find the bike runs hot so probably needs a good tune since it may have a factory EPA-compliant map.  I was thinking of swaping out the filter before getting the bike tuned.  I hear of a lot of people using the Big Sucker, but wondering what model is best to keep the stock filter cover.

Also any idea how expensive the software is?  Wondering if it's worth buying versus having it tuned on a dyno, assuming the dyno does not need the software

Big Sucker is fine

You might ant to look into the Revolution Performance ems system . By the time you pay for the software, and have it tuned....should be a wash

The software is available from your friendly Harley dealer, 32111-11 Software CD. $29.95.

is that the complete software with the smart tune for $30?  If so then I would prefer to try and tune it myself

I looked at the Big Sucker and seems there are a few different models, including some references to stage 1 and stage 2 filter.  anybody have the specific model of Big Sucker that works best with the stock filter cover?

Yes, that is the complete software CD with the smart tune feature.

When looking for a replacement air cleaner, be it the Ness Big Sucker or any of the others out there, you need to look for the version that fits '08 and later Touring models.  Prior years will not fit, as the throttle body was changed for '08.  The Stage 1 or Stage 2 thing refers to the physical size of the air filter element, and the Stage 2 sticks out further which isn't a great thing if you don't like an air cleaner rubbing your leg all the time. With a basically stock engine, Stage 1 is really all you need anyway.

Using any of the nonstandard air cleaners with the CVO cover is iffy.  You will find many threads on the site talking about covers falling off because the center nut in the end of the filter breaks out from vibration.  You can make it work if you add support.  See this thread for one solution:
