Kinda sounds like the same thing that happened to me, Chased a squeak for over a year, when on the way back home from Ribfest devolped a vibration, Took it to the dealer said nothing about the squeak just vibration, They heard squeak fixed it and that took care of the vibration, The nut and washer was missing from the top motor mount link.

Eqcons I have a 09 SERG and V&H power duals.I was having the same problem and took the whole exhaust apart trying to find problem.Noise was in every gear, neutral, sitting still or going down the road.Drove me nuts in Sturgis for a week. Finally found the problem, actually R&R found it for me.The bracket that holds the head pipes on to the frame on the right side just forward of the trans was cracked clean through but could not see it without taking off the pipes. This crack made like a tuning fork vibration that was felt in the foot boards bars and seat, mirrors were useless at 2800 rpm.The fix was to buy a new bracket and weld gusetts on the 90 degree bends in the bracket. Now smooth as silk and no noise.Hope this helps and keep us informed.

Nope, all fine on that front.

Just as an update to this, I'm no further forward.

I found a couple of problems - left muffler had got loose and slipped forward on the header, made no difference to the vibration, breather bolts on the Arlen Ness Big Sucker had come loose, and that accounted for the visual vibration of the air cleaner, but fixing it hasn't helped the vibration.

I changed the compensator to the newer type, which has made a big improvement in starting the bike, but hasn't helped the vibration.

I checked and rechecked the motor mounts, the exhaust bracketry, and for anything caught between the motor and the frame. Nada.

Three other strange things:

1) Oil pressure is a little higher than it used to be
2) Seems to have stopped using any oil
3) On accelerating - this is perfectly reproducible - around 2800-3000 rpm, there are two separate pings, just like the sound of a stone hitting the inside of the front fender.

Power is still fine, but I'm baffled, and worried that this is a scissored crank..... :nervous: :nervous:

I hate to be the bearer of BAD NEWS!!!!! Pull you cam cover check for crank runout. I will bet you your crank has gone way out of true. I may be wrong and I hope I am. But you are right in the problem stage for these motors as far as milage goes. It seems right around your milage either a lifter goes bad or a crank goes way out of true.

The only problem I am having with your problem is why has your oil pressure increased. There is no rhyme or reason why with your mileage it would have increased. Unless you just did an oil change!!!

Keep us posted!!!!!

Yes, Dawg, of course I'm suspecting the crank too, just hoping it ain't! Changed the lifters a while back, by way of preventative maintenance.  Oil pressure increase - well, could be a sticky pressure relief valve.

I'm coming round to thinking I'd better get a dial gauge and check the runout.

This really is krapp on a motorcycle that costs this amount of money though.  Ridiculous really.  If it IS crank runout, I'll be having a go at HD, even though the warranty expired 18 months ago. Law says things have to be durable, and fit for purpose, outside of any manufacturer's warranty here.
