How full is too full (Of Gas)
« on: May 22, 2014, 01:11:36 AM »

Havent posted in a while... new job keeps me freaking busy.

The flush mount cap on my 2012 FLTRXSE has been replaced once, due to fuel spilling out when hot and the smell of fuel when it was parked.

Now, 11 months later its doing it again, but a little worse this time around. This time the cap gets STUCK in the down position as I'm in line at the gas station!

This thing was stuck bad... but after removing the trim ring and using a few special words I was able to get the cap up and finally off.

Topped off fuel and headed to the dealership as they are only a couple of miles away... Of course I get there and with the heat the fuel is pretty full. (expansion from heat, I was in traffic)

So.. the service writer proceeds to fill me with BS, indicating the gas should never be filled above 1" below the filler neck, per HD. Regardless of that they will order replacement parts, and apparently they never replaced the regulator under the recall (I swear they did, but my old dealer closed).

Anyway, The dealer did not have any warranty info for my bike, so I had to look up my sales documents, give him plan numbers, etc. Again he comments about the tank being "overfull". I reply telling him I have used the same procedure to fill ALL of my HD's since 2002 and this was never an issue with the standard gas caps, just the flush mount.

For the record, the manual states (page 2):

When refueling your motocycle the following rules should be observed:
  • Refuel in a well ventilated area with engine turned off
  • Remove fuel filler cap slowly
  • Do not smoke or allow open flames or sparks when refueling or servicing the fuel system
  • Do not fill fuel tank above the bottom of the filler neck insert
  • Leave air space to allow for fuel expansion

There is also a warning on Pages 27 and 52:

Avoid spills. Slowly remove filler cap. Do not fill above bottom of filler neck insert, leaving air space for fuel expansion. Secure filler cap after refueling. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury.

I'm just a little peeved with the BS.

This dealership is either staffed with imbeciles, or they are trying to run you off because you didn't buy the bike from them (there are still plenty of those clowns running around).  First, you don't have to provide proof of warranty.  The days of little plastic warranty cards and similar crap are way behind us, and every dealer can easily obtain all the info they need by simply inputting your VIN to the Harley computer system.

As for the problem with the fuel cap, those problems can be caused by the cap itself, OR by the poorly formed threads in the tank.  There was a recall on those threads a few years back and dealerships received a tool to "fix" the threads.  It seems the cap bound up in the threads before the actual gasket made full contact, thus allowing fumes and liquid fuel to slosh out.

As for filling, if you just fill to the bottom edge of the filler pipe, you automatically leave about an inch of air space in the tank.  It's not necessary to leave the fuel level another inch below the bottom of the filler neck.

You should be able to go to any HD dealer and if they enter your VIN number in their system your OEM or extended warranty (if purchased through HD) should come up.

Jerry(grc),

Bike is out of factory warranty by 4 months. They were able to pull up the fact the bike supposedly did not have the regulator recall done.
When I bought the bike I also purchased a Western Service Contract along with the HD tire and wheel warranty at a much discounted rate.
The Western Service Contract seems to function better here in Hawaii (provided you leave the bike basically stock or use TTS and keep the bike stock appearing) and the tire and wheel warranty is a no brainer with the condition of our roads here.

I got a call yesterday from the “Customer service agent” at the dealership (Who was the Parts and Service Manager at the Old shop I did business with.)  I laughed because I knew why he was calling.  I told him you know me, I hate bullchitters and liars. So I told him about the 1” below the filler insert and he laughed…  He said just bring the bike in and he’ll have one of the senior techs work on it. (I know and trust them both)

It’s a QC issue for the pop-up cap… I know it, most of here know it.

Anyway, I’m waiting for the part to come in and I’ll take the bike in (They have a reputation for holding bikes hostage for a week just to change a tire….) They WILL give me a loaner until I get my bike fixed.

Either the old dealer never entered the info or the new dealer is full of it.  I stopped in a HD shop and they pulled up my bike in the computer and had a list of all my warranty repairs, recalls, etc. that were done at other shops.

I have invoices for all the previous work performed.

I think it was sheer stupidity.

My first cap didn't twist to a stop before I pushed down to make it flush....had problems with the fuel streaming. Since they replaced it, I have had no issues. It was too tight the very first time and I couldn't get it opened, but since then it's been good.
