Havent posted in a while... new job keeps me freaking busy.
The flush mount cap on my 2012 FLTRXSE has been replaced once, due to fuel spilling out when hot and the smell of fuel when it was parked.
Now, 11 months later its doing it again, but a little worse this time around. This time the cap gets STUCK in the down position as I'm in line at the gas station!
This thing was stuck bad... but after removing the trim ring and using a few special words I was able to get the cap up and finally off.
Topped off fuel and headed to the dealership as they are only a couple of miles away... Of course I get there and with the heat the fuel is pretty full. (expansion from heat, I was in traffic)
So.. the service writer proceeds to fill me with BS, indicating the gas should never be filled above 1" below the filler neck, per HD. Regardless of that they will order replacement parts, and apparently they never replaced the regulator under the recall (I swear they did, but my old dealer closed).
Anyway, The dealer did not have any warranty info for my bike, so I had to look up my sales documents, give him plan numbers, etc. Again he comments about the tank being "overfull". I reply telling him I have used the same procedure to fill ALL of my HD's since 2002 and this was never an issue with the standard gas caps, just the flush mount.
For the record, the manual states (page 2):
When refueling your motocycle the following rules should be observed:
- Refuel in a well ventilated area with engine turned off
- Remove fuel filler cap slowly
- Do not smoke or allow open flames or sparks when refueling or servicing the fuel system
- Do not fill fuel tank above the bottom of the filler neck insert
- Leave air space to allow for fuel expansion
There is also a warning on Pages 27 and 52:
Avoid spills. Slowly remove filler cap. Do not fill above bottom of filler neck insert, leaving air space for fuel expansion. Secure filler cap after refueling. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury.
I'm just a little peeved with the BS.
