I had a howling noise after having my compensator upgraded, it turned out to be the Michelin commander II rear tire, put a stock one back on.

A skating lifter makes the same noise....  Are you absolutely certain its coming from the primary area....

As sure as I can be......and it stated after the compensator and clutch upgrade.

Pulled the cover yesterday to look at mine after hearing the noise more frequently.  It was happening most often after the bike was run for a while.  The primary chain was a bit loose, but then noticed that the clutch basket was cracked in two spots.  We think the cracked basket could be causing the problem.  Will replace the basket and then see if that solves the problem.

Anyone know of a heavier clutch basket than the HD one?  According to the guys at Barnett, this is a common problem, but were not able to give me a better solution than the HD basket.

So the compensator/primary drive was making so much noise before you couldn't hear an ongoing tire noise?  Damn....

Nope I took it in for a service (it wasn't howling then) but there was some slight noise, it sounded to me more like a loose motor mount, the dealer replaced the compensator, I still have the motor mount noise. After I got it back we went on a trip to Hood river and during this trip the howling started I noticed they had over tightened the belt so took it back in, it still howled after the belt tension was sorted out then it was noticed there was a nail in the tire, once the tire was changed from the Michelin Comander to the stock tire the noise went away, its still at the dealers as I am overseas so haven't picked it up yet to see for myself.

For anyone considering the 30 tooth sprocket on the motor don't bother it doesn't have a compensator just the gear and you won't like the vibrations trust me. I'm sure other products are just fine.

Got it.  That's much more (clarifying) detail and explanation than I'd understood to begin with.  Initially it seemed you had a potential primary issue which caused a tire noise that was corrected by changing tire brands.  Makes much more sense when it's understood changing tire brands was an effective solution to an overtightened belt and punctured noisy tire.  Most important is glad to read it is getting sorted :2vrolijk_21: .

I will wait to see if that fixes your noise before I open it up again.....
