Screeching noise by Compensator
« on: June 15, 2014, 09:24:33 PM »

Replaced the compensator with the updated version on my '11 SESG. Now I have a screeching noise in the front of the primary on quick starts. IF I release the clutch slowly it's all good, but when I let out fast I get the noise. Sounds like it's coming from the comp area. Sprocket alignment is good. It is possible the spring pack is slipping--that's kind of like what it sounds like?? I added the 2 shims behind the spring pack as the instructions said on the install.

I also upgraded the clutch to the Energy One +1 kit, but the noise sounds like it's coming from the front of the primary.

Any ideas??

Any chance your primary chain is set to loose and it's slapping the inside of the primary housing on fast clutch releases?  Is the noise only for an instant upon clutch release?

Noise is there sometimes longer than others.......doesn't sound like the chain.....sounds kind of like a belt squeal in a car only lower in pitch and more metallic. Maybe the spring pack behind the comp??

I have the hayden tensioner which I have been running for over a year. Chain has good tension. The only changes this time were the comp and clutch.

I don't see how it could be the spring pack making a noise.  The shaft extension and sliding cam are splined and if the springs are assembled correctly and properly tensioned, they're not going anywhere.  My only suggestion is to take it apart and verify it's put together correctly, especially that the springs are in the correct orientation.  Look for any witness marks.  I've heard of some having bad castings of the sliding cam.  High spots on the casting so when the compensator releases, the sliding cam occasionally binds.  Part number 5 in the attachmet...

I would double check your instructions including the the stacked height ...you may need to add shims etc

Sounds like it is your clutch

I thought so also, but the noise is very pronounced at the front of the primary. Hate to do it, but was thinking of throwing another clutch in also.

Did you just replace the comp? Any other parts also?

I have had 2 different bikes making this noise.  Both got fixed by replacing transmission main shaft bearing.  These were both 08's.  Just throwing it out there.

A mainshaft bearing made a noise that sounds like it is coming from the front of the primary? It is definitely not coming back by the trans....it is right down next to my left leg.

How long is the noise.  Shorter than a second, longer?
