4 harleys and I have done every one of the scheduled maintenance on each one and each mileage interval.  A couple of things i did not feel comfortable doing, Like changing fork oil or gas filter i had done by my dealer.  What i have done is build a paper binder with all receipts, part of the oil filter box top and a copy of the required sevice for that mileage interval.  I have had ESP on 2 of the 4 bikes and i have not ever been questioned on "proof of scheduled maintenance" etc.  I prefer to do my own maintenance because i am very OCD about doing the job by the book.  However there is nothing wrong with having your dealer do your maintenance if you do not want to mess with it or feel better having a "dealer assigned" person do it....As long as you service your bike you are good to go so you are safe and not prematurely wear out your bike.  I dont buy into "I am more of a biker than you" because i service my own bike....if i were fine with paying almost $400 to $500 for simple lubricants and check-up then that is fine....I just struggle to spend that amount of money when i can do it for $75 in parts (oil, filter, and o rings)....with synthetic oils maybe for even less and take the difference and take a nice weekend ride out of town.  But if you are making a high salary or your time is very limited and 400 or 500 is nothing then please let's support our selling dealers.

I am having the 1K done by a tech that we know that is independent from the dealership.  He is very familiar with giving the documentation that the MOCO would need if there was ever a warranty issue.  Charging me $300 but I just believe I am better served on the first one to let someone more skilled go over everything...

It is interesting to read the responses here, but as a guy who has walked that mile in the shoes of a Service Advisor I must say some of these answers are from people who really do not know what goes on inside the Harley Shops. A service especially the 1K is not just a matter of an Oil Change especially the 1K and provided you find a shop you trust. I trust my Dealership and the Techs I request to work my Bike. I was able to get the 1K service in the deal at purchase.
I got a great trade eval and deal on my trade from my last bike because my dealership knew the bike top to bottom plus. So keep that in perspective. Another thing to put into perspective is when and if something goes wrong. The shop incurs some responsibility.
The 1K service is the most important service. Things loosen up during that time period especially the DriveBelt, which does require correct tensions. I am a Proponent for having it done by a Certified Tech
