1,000 mile service
« on: October 06, 2014, 05:55:22 PM »

Is it required that dealer do 1k service for warranty purposes. This is what service writer told me that as when they drain oil if there was any unusual metal particles in oil would be taken care of.   Just have a hard time paying $389.00 for oil change.  I can change the oil for way less.

It is not required, retain the receipt for the items, oil, filter, etc. That said, I think its a good idea to have a trained professional give the bike a once over every now and then.

I agree, I had the dealership do the 1,000 mile, I will do the 5,000 mile service.

I do them all myself. I know I care more about my bike than any mechanic working at the Stealer. Most won't keep their bike long enough or put enough miles on it to really even matter, but maintenance is easy and it doesn't take a "professional" to change fluids and make adjustments as needed. Just my $.02!

The service writer flat out lied to you, and you might want to consider that in any future dealings with this place.  There is absolutely no requirement that you have maintenance performed by a dealer to maintain warranty coverage.  This is something that is in fact regulated by federal law, and you might want to do some research on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975.

Are you capable of doing basic maintenance yourself?  If yes, you can do so and it will not affect your warranty.  If you aren't mechanically inclined, you can hire someone who is and have them do it.  There are plenty of independent shops that work on Harley's and many usually charge much less than the dealership.  I always suggest keeping receipts and actually documenting any work you do, but the legal burden of proof falls on the MoCo, not you, if they try to claim a failure was caused by lack of maintenance.

As for the comments about having a trained professional do the 1k service, when I stop laughing I'll let you know who it is at most dealerships that gets assigned to do the simple maintenance tasks.  It isn't the fully trained and experienced old pro, unless it just happens to be a one man shop.  What you will get is a simple fluid and filter change, perhaps a drive belt adjustment, and very little else, all performed by the least experienced kid in the shop.  If you really want everything on the checklist performed, you will need to insist on it up front and then stand there watching while it's done.  Get a copy of the complete checklist yourself, you can download it on the H-D website or find it in the shop manual.

They'll take care of it by changing oil and filter and telling you they all do that nothing to worry about.

Jerry,
To clarify, I didn't suggest or refer to having a "trained professional" at a Harley Davidson dealership complete his 1000 mile service for the exact reason you mention. After riding for many years and owning a few different HD models I am more than comfortable working on my bikes but I don't know everthing there is to know about them. As modern technology creeps into our rides my suggestion was to have a "schooled" tech wherever that may be give the bike a once over from time to time to assure proper operation of the motorcycle. The garage guy, me included can or may easily miss something the more experienced eye could pick up.

Regards, Erich

I think that I will have the 1st service done by the dealer just because I am still not familiar with the bike.

Time to buy a service manual and a parts manual and some tools. Save lots of money in the long run.
