I'm with Chip, being from Ohio, I have ridden many times in snow and ice. Didn't like it when I did but it was a necessatie at the time.

Glad you guys made it home safe.
Yea I've ridden in snow several times and ice once, certainly nothing comparable to what you all may have been through and deffinately no where close to the over 30 miles of ice we did. The most interesting thing was the black ice.  I've seen it in spots before but never on an entire freeway for the distance we could see which was about half a mile. It was somewhat oddly serene seeing all the lanes looking as though they had been freshly verathaned or shellacked. No flaws or white ice dusting, just a perfect clear coating.
We talked to a couple who had just came from Odessa Texas, the direction we were heading, and it had taken them 9 hours to travel the 175 miles to Abeline due to much more black ice and all the accidents
Like some of you have implied, sometimes you just get yourself in a situation and need to do whatever ya need to do. Like the Grinch's heart, you balls grow exponentially in those situations, despite the shrinkage factor.

First, just let me say VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!  Only highly skilled riders need apply to your little entourage.  Secondly, you Californy boys are some kinda crazy.  Who rides cross country at that time of year?  Oh yeah, I forgot about JCZ.  I rest my case: Crazy is confirmed.
Donner Party, indeed!  Neither one of you two has an ounce of fat to spare, so I don’t know who would be the diner and who would be dinner.
So, welcome home, boys.  Speaking of “boys”, did you experience any shrinkage?  That’s a rhetorical question; I don’t really want to know more details.  And definitely no pictures!

Cold is one thing and I can overcome that. Ice and snow is where I draw the line. Homie don't do 2 wheels on ice or snow, no way no how!

I don't do black ice with all wheel drive and studded snow tires!  If it looks like freezing rain I stay put.  Way too many crazy drivers and they can careless if they kill someone.  For some reason up here, people from out of state think that 65mph means 65 no matter the road conditions.

I would not even think about a car in those conditions unless forced to and never a motorcycle.  :o

Snow, freeze, ice storm is all fresh memory for me.  But for some reason, this thread reminded me more of the time the Nor Cal group got caught on Hwy. 50 out in the middle of Nevada (America's Loneliest Road) in a freak snow storm.  Going up hill in the snow requres a running start and don't slow down until you're at the top.   Being on motorcycles only made it even more interesting.  :o

Just another memory for a couple seasoned veterans.

Why is it we only see Californians riding in these kind of conditions? :nixweiss:

I used to really dislike riding in the snow. After riding on that much ice, the snow really didn't bother me much. I now hate riding on ice and still tense up thinking about it.
A cold hard fact.  :o
