Converting a 2014 tour pac to fit my 2013 RG Custom
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:18:35 AM »

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on putting a 2014 tour pac on my 2013 RG. I've read the two posts on here and I'm ready to order a 14 chopped pak with 14 detach kit. I already talked to Joe at Extreme about painting it. I wanted to know if anyone that did this, has any regrets. I'm mostly concerned with handling (the wife packs pretty heavy) and backrest position for a long road trip. We plan on doing a cross country trip next year and I really don't want to hear her complaining for 5000 miles  ::)

Thanks In Advance,

Dean

Well, you're on the right track already...

Not only will the chopped TP look awesome on your RG,  :2vrolijk_21:
there's less room for your wife to over pack,
so you're less likely to feel the extra weight hanging out the back!  ;D

If you have never had a TP, you will notice the difference, but you will soon get used to it,
and you will love the look while your wife will love the extra space.

Be sure to post pics when the transformation is complete.

Have a wonderful cross-country road trip.

The tour paks that came on the FLH Classics IME made the bike feel top heavy at low speeds, couldn't imagine the Ultra pak with speakers. When on a trip as soon as I reached my destination off came the trunk and into the motel room. When I went to a chopped tour pak the difference was amazing, I didn't know it was back there. It never came off in 10 years. Learning to pack smarter like using compression bags for clothing, we are able to nearly take everything we did with the Classic tour pak.  Plus it looks better IMO.

Thanks for the advise Grizzly and Ridgerunr. I've had full dressers in the past and remember how top heavy they can be when loaded down. I was more concerned with the fact I'm putting a 2014 tour pack on a 2013 bike. From what I researched on this site, it tends to hang out further over the back wheel then the 2013 tour pack does. I'm a little worried about the handling when packed heavy for a big trip. I was hoping to get a few comments from some of the members who did this. I just ordered my 14 primered chopped pack today and will be taking it to Joe at Extreme to work his magic. I'll post some pictures when I get it back and also followup with some feedback on how the bike handles with some weight in the pack. I hope I'm making the right move here and not wasting my money.  :-\

Can't see where your 2013 is different from my '15, frames are the same. I have a chopped tour pak on the 15 and it looks to be in the same location as the chopped pak I had on my 2004. If the mounting brackets are same from 13' to 15' you'll be fine as there is about 1.5 inches of adjustment, forward or back.
