S&S Warranty Question
« on: February 03, 2015, 03:52:48 PM »

I'm having an issues with a T124LC that is being handled by S&S.  For the life of me I can't get a straight answer on the warranty.  I had a base & head gaskets leak at the end of 2013.  S&S  provided the parts and I was told it would be covered for the labor but that never happened.  I did not drive way out to where I had the new motor installed since it was a small job and was handled by a local shop for the warranty.  Since they leaked again last fall 2014 the motor was sent back to S&S.  I was dealing with technical support where I was told I didn't follow the protocol for reimbursement.  So I paid but now I'm facing the cost of having the motor removed and re-installed.  I would expect the labor to be significant this time around.  The shop has asked for my title to send to S&S so I'm guessing that they make good on a new motor, but I have not been told anything on cost.  They are a good company to do business with and I have no regrets but when I had someone else call for warranty info he was told parts & labor for one full year.  Technical support did tell me that there was a year warranty that would be extended for the same area if another repair was needed.  If I come out of this well I will address the tranny and the clutch.  There is a lot more power that is subjected to the stock parts that were never designed for the additional HP & TQ, but that is just my opinion.   Not bashing anyone just looking for info.

Any dealers or owners have any info that would help?

Some info here for future reference, since you said you'll have to deal with beefing-up the tranny and clutch.  This is from Independent_1, a vendor on here.  His recipe for parts to install:

"The other parts are the Evolution Industries Diamond Terminator clutch complete with their new clutch basket. The stock ones crack and even explode with the added power. The EI unit is much more robust and more than capable of holding the power and then some. The next 3 pieces are from Baker Drivetrain but since you have a hydraulic clutch, I believe the Baker Heavy Duty throwout bearing is not compatible with your setup so that leaves you with the Baker Attitude Adjuster (it's the manual primary chain adjuster). The stock unit over tightens due to the increased torque and because of the over tightening, it puts undue stress on the inner primary bearing, the output shaft bearing and sometime the mainshaft bearing and soon one or more of these bearings will fail. The last part of the recipe is the Baker Street Door. It replaces the stock, cast trap door with a billet trap door that is much stronger and reduces flex of the main and countershafts that the helical cut gears within the transmission amplfy when the extra torque is applied to them. The Baker Door also uses larger bearings than the stock door has and replaces the snap rings that the stock door has with a steel plate and 12 point ARP fasteners to insure the bearings stay put which reduces the flex of the shafts even further."

He also pointed out that the Baker DD-7 (and probably other Baker tranny) is strong enough to handle the T124 (although we were talking about the LC version--don't know which you have).  Hope this helps you after you get the rest of it settled.

My most sincere thanks to Jim at Independent 1.  How do you thank a guy who has gone to bat for you and assisted in making things happen even though we have never done business together.  That is a man who cares.  I dropped off the MSO to the installer and was told the good news about receiving a new motor as a goodwill gesture from S&S.  This action by S&S has exceeded my expectations and go along way to make up for all the BS I had to take from Mother Harley.  Double Coppers thanks for the info but I was well aware of the Recipe that Independent 1 posted on here when upgrading to the 124" and I couldn't agree more on his statement.  Lots to think about.

Thanks all, just can't put my thoughts to words.

We just performed warranty service work on a 111" that a father/son installed into a big-wheel bagger.
S&S(Brent Glick) took care of it in spades.

Ray

What dealer did you get it from in the first place.. Maybe they could be helping out, lending a hand so to speak as S&S helps the shops.

Bringing it to the original installer was not going to happen plus it would have been impractical to drive & trailer a full days ride just for leaking base & head gaskets.  I was originally told that S&S covers the parts & labor for the first year so I found a shop that would do it locally but Chris from S&S in technical support said the proper paperwork was not completed properly to recover the cost of the labor so that was that, and I was out $432.00 for the labor.  After the same issue happened again the next year I did not want another set of gaskets, this motor was leaking bad and using oil at an alarming rate.  I figured that S&S would want the motor back and just make things right and they eventually did just that.  The local shop should receive the new 124" in the Granite color to match my 08 CVO Road King this week.  I don't know any other details at this point concerning cost.

You are absolutely right that if a person was close the shop that did the original install things would have been much smoother.  Every aspect got really complicated when a third party got involved.  I had no way of knowing this would escalate the way it did, but it all turned out in the long run.  Now I have to make some decisions on the tranny, clutch and removing an exhaust I never wanted in the first place.  If I can swing it and that is a big if at this point, I hope to have the V&H headers and the Crusher Mellows that will make the sound more tolerable.  How do you not understand a customers request in writing for a reasonably quiet exhaust system due to age and hearing loss and you receive your bike with a Bassani Road Rage,  what part of ROAD RAGE did the original installer not understand?   It might be a perfect exhaust for someone but it is way to loud for the wife & I even with ear plugs.

To avoid travelling I originally wanted R&R who is in the next town to purchase and install the S&S 124" and an order was being written up by Art but Reggie Jr. said no way we make a 124 and I'm not going through the BS with S&S.  So I did try.

Steve I will be in touch for some info on the primary.

Back to more snow removal on my 1,800 foot driveway with my trusty man throwing snow-blower.

boy, it sounds like there were some "issues" with the original shop that factor into all this......

is the real issue that the original installer didn't do what was requested in the firsts place - and thats why you went someplace else?

bummer all around

Ray sounds like the first deal did not go well..  But hope that it gets sorted out now.. as for the ex the crusher muffler in either std or mellow work great. I run the mellows on my 124 and they have a great sound without being too loud for passenger or to listen to the radio.

ROAD RAGE  . :zwtf:. They have never been a mild ex system, power wise sure but man they are LOUD!!

Again sound like you got a bad deal and I hope that you get it handled.. Take your time on the snow .. like wait until spring to start working on it HA HA maybe some will melt be then.

Not funny on the snow Steve!  My driveway needs another pass with the snow-blower as soon as I finish this.  Just saw the new motor this morning, it was still in the box.  No notes or charges from S&S just a new Granite 124 with the external oil lines to replace the black one 124 using the Harley cases.  I won't exaggerate at all on this but two summers with the Road Rage and both my wife and I are suffering the continuous ear ringing real bad, ear plugs helped but it was way louder than I wanted and he knew it.  Thanks Scott P, appreciate your lack of concern!  We now have to have something running in the house all the time just for white noise.  I will go with the Crusher Mellows and purchase an 09 oil pan so they fit.  I have a heated work space and if I start in two weeks  I might have it ready when the huge snow piles are gone.  I have never stripped my bike down so far,  I hope it goes back together without any issues.   Shocks and front end have to go to Traxxion for rebuilding, but I still need to address the tranny.  The bank account will be running on empty if I put the Baker DD7 in the bike, may just do the Trap Door and hope for the best.

Someone has way to much time & money on their hands!  You would think you would at least be able to have a place to sit while moving the snow into the next zip code.   I should have moved near Hondo TX when I had the chance when I sold my business up here 11 years ago.  I have 3 goals right now, get the bike fixed, get the house ready & sold, move to where I can enjoy some sun and warmer temps year round.  It's going to happen it's just a matter of when.  I use to bow hunt with some guys I made custom bows for near Crystal City and a few times in Falfurrias.  The high fences did not slow down the border jumpers at night crossing the ranchers property,  a whole different world out there in Southern TX.  They owned a few ranches out there but lived north of San Antonio.

When the motor and the Baker Street Door is installed I will take it home to put the rest back together.  I'll be in touch for your Compusave to help this sixth compensator live past 10,000 miles.  I have the Energy one with the VP-92 and I have to use ATF.  Is their a clutch that you recommend that will handle a thicker primary fluid or am I stuck with using the ATF?  I would think that a thicker fluid with your compusave might get some extra miles out of the compensator.

Oh I wore ear plugs and earmuffs while snow-blowing and my ears are ringing like crazy.
