Yes, I am a member.  By all means join.  The AMA (and ABATE, which I am also a member of) are the NRA (also a member)of the motorcycle world.  2 things you get make it really worth while: The magazine is great and the email alerts of legislation impacting motorcycles is priceless.  If you are at all an activist for motorcycle rights please join.  I hope you (and everyone else) considers becoming a member.

I received the same notice in the mail. What do they actually do for you as far as legislation is concerned? I hear so many groups talk about this but only a few have stated what they actually accomplished.

Dead on, while there is strength in #'s the only thing I have seen passed was something thta had grass roots backing anyways and not sure if AMA members made a huge difference or not. Still, it couldn't hurt.

One thing they did accomplish was in New York - NYC was ticketing motorcycles for being in the HOV lanes.
Federal laws supposedly say that if your state receives federal monies then you will allow motorcycles in the HOV lanes.

NYC said screw the feds, we ain't allowing it. Lots of bickering going back and forth. Eventually some female rider that got a ticket decided to fight, the AMA jumped in with both feet and footed the legal battle and team.

As a result, motorcycles can indeed ride in the HOV lanes in NY now. The precedent wasn't just motorcycles. Any roadway system receiving federal funds has to abide by the federal use guidelines.

Everyone of us needs to belong to the AMA.  I was amazed at the question above regarding what do they really do.  If you don't know try the google machine. PLEASE everyone join, they are probably our best friend in keeping our riding rights.

Most of the benefits are the same as any motorcycle group but there isn't much on what they have done as far as regulations etc.  The above comment around HOV lanes was a solid example of doing something.  I just don't see a lot around how they drive to protect motorcycles through legislation. All the other benefits are fine. I do think contacting your senators and representatives with your POV on issues will help as well especially if every rider did that. It sounds like a fine group.

Yes please join the AMA. You will receive discounts from certain vendors, they can and have protected riders rights on road and off road.  They have two different publications based on your riding type.

I'm sure there plenty of things they do that we don't even see

Lifetime member here. Started when I raced enduro's and motocross as a kid. Still play off-road and they are instrumental in keeping government from shutting down off road access in many areas. Also legislate against motorcycle only checkpoints. They also provide organized racing for several motorcycle types, flat track, motocross, road racing, etc. They are huge in amature racing for kids of all ages and skill levels. Great benefits for all riders of all types .

I've been an AMA member for about 15 years.  I enjoy the variety of bike racing series the AMA sanctions, and the AMA is one of the few motorcyclist advocates that represent our interests.

I could be wrong but I think they were instrumental in my state for lobbying to politicians for the right to choose wether or not I want to wear a helmet while riding.

Been a member of Abate for 35 years.  Used to be a member of AMA,  but when they took on the slogan  "Loud pipes risk rights" and pushed that nationally,  I quit.  My loud pipes have saved my ass more times then I care to count.
I live near the Canadian border, (not that I'm saying they are bad drivers)  but when they cross that border with nothing but shopping on their mind,  they are a little nuts on the road.

How you "like" it is to join....get involved, do your part.  Not just AMA but any and all MRO (motorcycle rights organization).  AMA, ABATE, MMA (Modified Motorcycle Association), etc.

The struggle crosses over.....if you're an off roader of any kind (truck, quads, sand, dual sport, dirt bikes, etc.)  then these organizations have all fought to keep the government off of your back.  Not always successful because to many people want to kick back and let somebody else do the work.....then they want to complain when these laws are passed.  Get active, participate.....not just with the pocket book but help out with the leg work, the grunt work.

Some of the biggest rides I've led isn't with the members of these forums but by being a member for MMA, ABATE and AMA.  Preserve the right to choose.  :2vrolijk_21:  Even BOLT (Bikers of a Lesser Tolerance) have done their part to fight some of these overbearing laws.
