Tank badge issue
« on: February 16, 2015, 04:38:29 PM »

15 CVORGU parked in garage with battery tender. No heat in garage. Noticed today that the center portion of the right tank badge has "popped" lose. It's still attached at each end and seems pretty secure but the center won't stick back. Badge flexes and the tape has lost its grip.

Do you think it will stick when it warms up, or should I plan a trip to have the dealer look at it?

Checked weather and I'm not getting it out anytime soon. Bummer

Its not gonna get any better just because the weather warms up. Plan on stopping by your dealer & have them replace the badge when weather permits. May not hurt to call ahead & explain what is going on, maybe they will order one & have it when you get there.

Trying to re-adhere a badge that has come loose is usually a failure waiting to happen.  Have the dealership replace it.  The surface needs to be properly prepped, and both the tank and the emblem need to be warm (room temp or higher; I prefer 80-90°F) for best results when the new emblem is pressed into place.  And yes, it needs to be firmly pressed into place, it's a pressure sensitive adhesive.

Thanks for the replies. I'll give them a heads up and plan a trip when the weather clears.

Yep, good to let dealer replace it.  They had two twice on my 09 SERG.

I will sure look at the ones on my 15 SERGU when I get home Wednesday.

The one on the left side seems fine. I figured the cold snap here caused the tape to lose its bond.

I miss my old heated garage........

If it was adhered properly to begin with, a cold snap wouldn't cause it to pop loose.  And if the contour of the emblem matched the tank contour, there wouldn't be any stress trying to lift up one part of the emblem.  Usually when the emblems don't fit the profile of the tank well, it's one of the ends that pops loose.

My '12 has had both badges replaced under moco warranty - the right side twice. Sure hope they stay in place because I do not think ESP will pay for them.

With a history of failures while in warranty, you shouldn't have to worry about ESP not covering cosmetic items.  Harley should handle it themselves; getting you past the 24 months doesn't absolve them of responsibility with a known repetitive defect.

If the guys replacing the emblems first try laying the emblem against the tank with no pressure (and before peeling the backing off the adhesive of course0, they could easily determine where to install the emblem so that it matches the contour of the tank and therefore will have no stress trying to lift one part of the emblem.  The rest of it involves proper prep of the surface followed by following the proper process for application.  Just laying an emblem up against the surface and thinking they are done isn't the proper process. Prep, temperature, alignment, and pressure.

My 2015 FLTRUSE arrived from the factory with both tank badges falling off, the dealer ordered new ones and replaced them before I took delivery. Have  the dealer order new ones.

Damn guys, now I'm afraid to venture out to the garage and see if mine are laying on the floor. It's been cold as hell the last couple of weeks.  >:(

The cold weather does not affect the current quality of 2-sided tape. It has been refined into a good product. Every car and most trucks have emblems and mldgs that are held on with the same tape/adhesive. MOST times when they come off it is due to surface prep during original install or the arc of the mldg/emblem was a little off when installed. When put on correctly they just don't fall off anymore. And why would anyone worry about whether a dealer would cover it or not? Seems to me this is being way overthought.

Just to be clear...........the tape appears to be stuck well. The center portion of the badge is pulling away from the tape. The badge looks like it's hollow and pretty flexible.

A trip to the dealer is in order soon as the weather clears.
