CVO110 UNKNOWN PIPE
« on: February 17, 2015, 02:36:06 PM »

Information if you could please.

The 110" is starting to be stripped down to fit valve springs, chain tensioners, lifters and cam shaft bearings. On the way the pipe shown on the attached photograph has been encountered. It is open ended as shown and the belief is it should have an end cap, so one will be fitted.

What is the purpose of the pipe. What will have been the consequences of the bike being run for about 16k miles from new with it open.

The report is that the rear exhaust pipe is discoloured beyond the normal Blue to a Green colour (never seen a green pipe before), so it would seem excessive heat has been achieved.

Also to be fitted are Vance and Hines headers and a power commander. (Already got V&H Ovals fitted).

Your observations would be appreciated

Regards

Update

The description is; "purge pipe" according to parts book and it should be fitted with a cap. Alex, of Fastlaneheadworks uk who is doing the work, suggests the pipe appears to have never been fitted with a cap.

Photo of green header attached. As stated by Alex this bike has been seriously hot.

Draw your own conclusions of the thoughts I have of Harley QA if this is the result of an unfitted plastic plug  to the pipe in previous post.

That's a vacuum port on your TB.  It should have a rubber cap on it.

Update

Alex has now got down to the cam chain tensioners, photo attached. Not bad I suppose for 16k miles.

your "tech" didn't know there is supposed to be a vacuum cap on the vacuum port on your throttle body?  :confused5:

Not only should the vent be capped, the cap should be secured with a mini zip tye to make sure it stays there!!  Without it will induce a very lean run and bad performance all around. fwiw  twinotter

Ditto CAP IT.

AND zip tie the cap in place as a good backfire out the TB can blow it off and induce all kinds of problems from intake leak.

Thanks for the comments.

All done now I pick it up on Saturday. BeeHive springs. Hyd Lifters. Inside cam bearings, cam chain tensioners, new valve stem seals. V&H headers, Power commander and the plastic cap. Good suggestion to zip tie it on, I did wonder what would happen if it backfired.

Really looking forward to trying it but I need the salt on the roads to go away first.

The valve stem seals were apparently allowing quite a bit of oil through to the extent of significant oil deposit burn/build up on the pistons.

Here's a theory; because the plastic cap was missing did it allow the engine to overheat to the extent it cooked the seals on the valves which allowed the oil to build up and burn in the combustion chamber. See the photograph.

Large motors huff more stuff, and unless breathed to a catch can will build up a good amount of carbon. Periodically run Sea Foam in the fuel and once or twice a year spray a little through the TB, I spray then change the oil.

Unmetered air will cause lean condition. As mentioned plug it. Use that port to periodically clean engine combustion chambers with seafoam.
