What adhesive for fairing trim?
« on: February 22, 2015, 05:08:30 PM »

I took off the black trim on my Road Glide fairing today as it was coming loose and was dirty. I pulled it off and it was sticky. I cleaned everything up and need to attach it to the fairing.  What adhesive have you used and was it successful?  Thanks

There's a product on the market called X-Trim that many on the RG site speak about. Others simply go to the local parts store and buy off the shelf stuff and use it. I don't know what kind of luck you'd have trying to readhere the stock one.

I have used 100% silicone caulk on numerous bikes over the years and the trim has always remained in place. You just have to be careful you don't make a mess. Once applied I use tape spaced every few inches to keep it in place as it dries.

3M has a trim adhesive that is clear, comes in small tube and works exceptional, IF you clean the mldg and the surface prior to using it. You can use cut the application nipple short to where it will fit down in the Road Glide moulding and apply a small bead of the clear adhesive, let it tack a few moments and apply. I Have never had this stuff fail, whether on a car moulding or my RG. Most 3M stuff is good, can be bought at about any auto parts store from the same area that has silicone, never-sieze and similar stuff.

+1, been using 3M for years.

X-Trim is great stuff.  No adhesive needed, stays in place, and looks great.  Head and shoulders above the stock stuff. Do a google search for the website.

I found one of mine pinched prolly by me when reinstalling the outer fairing. I bought new black trim pieces from the Dealer (cheap) if you can believe that. The new ones have some kind of sealant in them and the went on nice and easy just be mindful bout checking before clamping down to make sure the trim pieces are lined up and not pinched. :2vrolijk_21:
