water pump cover
« on: February 23, 2015, 04:15:08 PM »

I was wiping the bike a little yesterday and noticed this on the water pump cover......Anyone else had theirs to do this? It's peeling off.

I'll check mine next time I get my butt off the couch, but if I was you I'd get that warrantied by the dealer!  That's BS on a 1 year old bike.

Guys keep in mind that that cover sits in perfect line with the tire and all the rocks, gravel, and crud that impacts a chrome covered piece of plastic is bound to cause finish damage. I plan on buying the black plastic cover used on a Limited so I don't anguish over the chrome finish. Will use it when the original cover turns crappy.

You beat me to the punch.  It is rather sad that they chose to use a plated piece of plastic in an area they know is going to be sandblasted by road debris.  Of all the substrates they could choose, plastic is the one that will show damage the quickest and most severely.  It's rather strange that the chrome plated steel that surrounds my oil cooler, located in that same area down low, still looks good after ten years.  I guess the new management group couldn't come up with a few cents more to use steel with a proper chrome finish.

I've got a suggestion for the replacement part.  Buy some clear paint protection film and apply it before you install the new part.  It might make the plastic look decent a bit longer.
