Exhaust Gasket of Choice
« on: February 28, 2015, 11:19:53 PM »

When installing new head pipes, Fuel Moto offers three different exhaust gasket options.  James, Cometic, and Fuel Moto Spiral wound.  The salesman highly recommended their spiral wound gasket.  Upon receipt of the Fuel Moto exhaust gasket, they are really funky/thin looking and I really have my doubts they are going to seal.

Has anyone had negative experiences with these spiral wound exhaust gaskets?  It is still not too late, if I should have gone with the Cometic or James.

Thanks for the Advice,

The Harley gasket set P/N 17048-98 is popular in my neighborhood for after market pipes, it fits almost everything Harley made in the last 30 years and is trouble free, cheep too.

When I installed my new Fullsac head pipe last year I reused the factory gasket, which was the advice given to me by Fullsac, and it worked perfect !! No exhaust leaks and sounds great. I did however purchase a new one from my Local H-D Dealer just in case, and still have it. FYI, Fullsac supplied a brand new gasket with my exhaust system which I did not use and still have. Good Luck with your project, you're gonna love the difference over the stock head pipe !!

For those chasing numbers it's been said when the stock HD gasket compresses it can obstruct the port, the thin FM spiral is likely similar to the SE ex. gaskets. I've had good luck with Cometic or Kuryakyn copper gaskets. On a stock motor I'd use OE without worry.

IMO I would definitely go with whatever the exhaust system mfg recommends. If they don't seal they should not sell them for their exhaust.
Knowing Jamie, I believe the products he sells are tested to work...not just a repackager who is clueless until customer complaints start pouring in.
Stock gaskets work just fine as long as the installer realizes if he tightens the system at all and then tries to reposition it. That is what swooshes the gasket into the ports.

I went ahead and installed the "spiral wound" Fuel Moto gaskets even though they do not look like they would seal.  I followed the installation procedure in the Harley service manual as directed by Fuel Moto.  It will probably be a couple more weeks before I am ready to start the bike and check for leaks.  I'll post an update, if there are leaks, but if not assume no new is good news.

Thanks for Your Advice Everyone,

I have the spirals and do not have any issues with them.  I liked them just because they were easier to install than the mesh ones.

I've always used stock gasket for stock pipes and SE (spiral wound) for aftermarket pipes. No leaks.
