As soon as the temps get above 40* it's into the garage. I've made my mind up that I'll be taking off the V&H Dresser Duals and putting the stock header with cat, back on. My tinnitus is getting worse even with faithfully using custom made ear plugs from my hearing specialist. I'll try my Monster Rounds and hope it will be somewhat quieter. If not, then the stock mufflers will be used. The Wards Parts Werks Fans have done just fine for the past 3 years. The fans with the Power Vision will just have to deal with the heat. I also have a catless headpipe in case I can't take the heat. Anyone know how much quieter the catless header is compared to the Dresser Duals if I go that route?

im also one of those who want it quiet....

what i read is that a larger volume muffler with the same diameter outlet & a double wall outside wrap is the quietest - but the biggest cans available are 4"

the aftermarket is entirely focused on as much noise as possible without a ticket - i want quiet and I'm going to keep riding a harley as long as i live ... according to the theory it would be pretty easy to make a real quiet low restriction muffler - its just going to be a bit large.. something to add onto the never ending list of shop projects....

I find it odd that hearing protection doesn't work.  Do you use it religiously?

Perhaps some off the shelf ear plugs would work better.  I had some expensive custom molded ear plugs made and they were only slightly better than nothing at all.  Useless on the pistol range, and nearly useless on the bike.

In all my years in the Army the triple flange worked the best against generator noise, two years on the rifle range as a Drill, and since on my Harleys.

But due to an unexpected firing of an 8-inch gun, I have severe Tinnitus (and am a little bit jumpy at loud noises).

Certain foods, like chocolate, and certain meds, like NSAIDS can seem to make it worse.

Can you get a smaller baffle for the V&H cans that are on the bike now?  I know they make a quet insert.

My ear plugs work just fine. Can't ride without them or a helmet (helps a little bit too). Makes the motor sound better as they eliminate the sewing machine sound. I had Dresser Duals on my 08 Ultra with the 103". Biggest mistake I made on that bike.

My CVO came with them and the Monster Rounds. Having a 110 does make a difference in the loudness. They sound great at idle; but like I tell everyone, you don't ride at idle! The stock cans were almost quiet enough but became tiring after hours in the saddle, my favorite type of riding.

Looking forward to all this snow leaving so I can experience the difference. Thanks for all the input to date.

If you want Quiet and keep the heat away ... Keep the Dresser Duals on and install a set of Supertrapp Fatshots Mufflers ... I have attached a Sound Chart to help you..

A suggestion that could help:  If you re-install the stock header (cat or not), why not re-use the stock SE mufflers and remove the plug located inside the mufflers?  It's an easy process, gives you some noise when you blip the throttle and sounds good at idle.  However, it's not near the uncomfortable level at highway speeds as other aftermarket muffles.  It doesn't give you any more HP but from what you describe, you aren't looking for performance numbers as much as you are looking for less noise.

go to your dealer as them for stock take off mufflers from a touring bike anything but a cvo or screaming eagle and try them out but make sure there off at least a 12 because they breath better they probably will give them too you not many people looking for them

Quiet and still make all the power? Crusher Mellows.

I'm not sure there would be a big DB change in a catless OEM vs dresser duals, but there would certainly be a "tone" change.

I fitted the dresser duals last weekend. Put the quiet baffles in the twin slash mufflers, they are not too loud. Not a lot of difference between the stock headers and the slash cuts with standard baffles.

Love the sound and haven't noticed any loss of low down torque

I've been down this road before. A castles header will be much more quiet than the dresser duals. The catless header creates a muffled sound to the exhaust. "Not as crisp" if you can understand.

never used hearing protection... at least i wear a helmet - in 75 what was hearing protection? huge muffs? really??

used to run straight pipes in the 70's - thats why i know that stock pipes have more power than drags, in 79 drags cost 50 bux and everything else was hundreds...   guys would spend hours trying to stick just the right something up the drag pipes to get the power close to stock... which was what? 50 something on a good day?

run heavy equipment all day - up to 80 hrs a week

raced a bit, two years drove a freight liner cab over with a 8v71... after 10 hrs in that my whole body would be vibrating.. god they are loud.

and the excavator with the 8v92 - oh my god it was too loud to have a conversation two blocks away...

used to tune carbs with a tach

now i don't hear to well - but the real deal is that loud really bothers me a lot - and stuffing anything in my ears bothers me more. i tell all the young guys to wear ear plugs - i say huh? so often they all know why.

so i want my personal truck, cars,  and personal bike as quiet as i can get them - wear a helmet - rarely listen to music.. spend more time on the computer than watching tv - the tv is just noise - i use the captions.

way it is - i want the quietest mufflers i can lay my hands on.  ear plugs are a real good idea for those who don't already have issues - for those of us with issues - quiet rules.

Duals hurt performance too. Try the V&H power duals, not a real tru dual, has a combined chamber so flows like a 2-1-2. Put on stock SE pipes with them for nice sound. Not as loud as Power Duals and Monster rounds but same note quality. Add the monster rounds if needed. Do not use monster duals- PIA to line up to each other and to saddle bags. Good sound, just PIA to get straight.

Well my garage finally got above freezing. Made the change today to stock headpipe and used my Monster Rounds. Sounds more to my liking at idle. I can't take it on the roads yet, just to much salt, sand and melting snow to be worth the clean up time. Flashed the ECM with a tune from Dynojet that is close to my setup. Riding season is approaching not fast enough.
