Front Monotubes Versus Oil Change
« on: March 06, 2015, 02:01:52 AM »

I have a 15 CVO Limited. I am tired of the nose dive and the harshness of the front and feeling every little bump. I have been thinking about swapping out the front shocks or changing out the oil. I know some folks love one way or the other. If you are an oil guy, what mix and ratio did you use. If you are a mono, which ones did you go with?  And, if you have gone both ways,  :mango: which one did you prefer?

I am also going to do the rears and have been debating between the Ohlins #3, #6 or Pro-Action and leaning towards the Pro-Action but that's not really for this topic.

Now, let the minds wonder for some entertaining posts while the few, post something meaningful.  ;D

well, me being the cheap bastard that i am would go the cheap route first.  what's a couple of bottles of fork oil cost?  $15.00?

i personally like the se heavy, though some feel it is too stiff.  (stay away from the race, thats like cold concrete).  others prefer a mix of the heavy and stock type e, 50/50 or 60/40.

it's pretty quick to just change the fluid in the forks, a complete tear down is not necessary.

so i would go that route first, then if you aren't happy, then look into the monotubes or better upgrades.

I went from stock oil to SE oil then to monotubes... didn't notice much if any difference as it relates to front end dive by changing fluids... big difference when going to the monotubes. Sorry I waited so long to make the change.

Now, why do have to go being all logical and making sense now?  ;)

Actually, I had thought about this route but want to look at all options. In my research, I have read that it improves the nose dive buy not the ride.

The Progressive Monotube uses a completely sealed and pressurized damper unit similar to a shock absorber.  The only fluid added during installation is a small amount that lubricates the seals but does not have anything to do with damping.  The Harley version looks similar, but it isn't sealed or pressurized, and you still fill the legs with fluid just like the stock setup.  Basically, it just replaces the stock damper rods with cartridge style damping units.  As for which approach is best, I'll leave it to those who have had both to explain.
