Roadside Assistance Programs----Which one is best
« on: March 09, 2015, 10:45:34 AM »

 :confused5:

For years,  I've been a HOG member and paid my $19.95 for the Road America coverage.  Had a couple of occassions to use it in the past and had pretty good results.

However,  I'm also a member of AAA to have coverage for my car/truck and last year I added the (Plus RV) to it.  As I understand it,  this extended coverage thru AAA should cover my bike if need be and thus I really no longer need the Road America coverage.

Has anyone used their AAA (Plus RV) and can vouch for good coverage with a bike mishap.  I'm about to drop the HOG related coverage. :-\

I don't know how AAA works with a motorcycle or more specifically, a Harley.  But Road America will take you not just to the next town or garage but to the next town that has a HD dealership.  That would be critical if your bike is still under factory warranty and then still critical because there are independent motorcycle shops that can swap parts but know nothing about the mechanics, tuning, etc. especially in isolated areas of the country.

For $49.95 a year you can get the Road America Ultra Plus plan......http://www.harley-davidson.com/content/dam/h-d/documents/owners/harley-owners-group/hog-member-events-and-calendar/142659_HOG15_RoadsideAssist_Form.pdf

I have the AAA coverage and had to use it last year. I also have the 'free' level of RoadAmerica through HOG and towing with my insurance company. I called all three trying to line up a tow and AAA was definitely the best.  They will tow you anywhere you want to go up to 100 miles I think it is.  That is good because the nearest HD dealer did not have the part I needed in stock but one in the opposite direction and further away did.  The towing company AAA sent was great but of course you are somewhat at the mercy of whomever is available and has a contract with the provider in your area so it is somewhat of a crap shoot in any case.  But the fact that AAA gives the flexibility to let you decide where to tow is great imo.   :2vrolijk_21:

Is this this the same assistance I would receive from my HD ESP?

While down in Oregon I had the misfortune of having the front engine mount on the '08 fail.....My BCAA membership got me a flatbed with a nice wheel chock to winch the bike on with and it was strapped down 'nicely'. I was as happy as I could be......

I had to use the basic HOG towing one time and even though everything turned out alright it was scary as hell!

HOG told me since the dealer was closed the tow company would take it to their garage and then tow it to the dealer in the morning. HOG also told me I would have to pay the overnight storage and for the second tow in the morning.

I was 60 miles from home and it was 9 pm. I told HOG ok then we are taking the bike to my house. She said ok but also told me it would not be a flatbed as the basic coverage did not cover that.

Fortunately I had a friend that knew the GM of the local dealer and my friend was able to get the GM to open up at that time of night so the tow company could drop my bike there.

The tow company arrived in 45 minutes and it was a conventional tow truck with the wheel chock lift and hoist. I was very nervous but the young man had done this before and he quickly had the bike hoisted and secured with no damage.

That being said I was on a trip in Wall SD when my buddy got a flat tire, he called AAA and they were there before we could finish eating lunch, loaded the bike into a trailer and took him to Pierre SD HD dealer. He signed the ticket and was good to go.

Most all of the major insurance companies have entered the tow/labor arena. One I work for has this coverage now and it is cheap @ about $28/year. They could care less how far it is, it is a motorcycle and has to go to a m/c dealer. If it goes to your house tonite, it gets a second tow next morning and they cover both, it was night, shop was closed.
Check it out, you get everything AAA Recreatonal + offers (except the maps). AAA rec + is over a $100. And Rec + is what you need in order to have any control of where your bike goes. I pay the $28.00 to the insurance company and have only used it once but it was a breeze. I have it on my car, bike trailer and bike. And the HOG free stuff is always there if you need it.

I've both. HOG tow & AAA.

2 yrs ago I broke down and called HOG, I was told my basic coverage wouldn't cover it since I was 5 miles beyond its limit but that I could get it towed for an upgrade in my membership tow coverage. I told them no thanks and called AAA, they sent a flatbed truck, I wish they all carried those skate wheel dolly thing for the front wheel. Makes loading a heavy bike easier.

I'm pleased with AAA.

I have Roadside America
in 2008 coming home from Milwaukee my Road King failed to start after getting gas.  They towed me to a Motel in Sturgis the Harley dealer was closed for the day. The tow driver told me that had I not had insurance it would of been around $600.00 he dropped the bike at the Motel and a different tow driver came in the morning towed me to the dealer again no charge.
All for a lose battery cable, boy was I humiliated, but I was back on the road!!

I have always had Road America..used it once with no problems, however the 2nd time when I hit the pothole returning from maggive Valley at 8:00 at night I was on the phone with them for 30 minutes after giving them my exact location from the GPS--I got disconnected!!! The woman had my cell number and never called me back. Fortunately for me I was 65 miles from home and I called a friend with a pickup and ramps and we got the bike home. If there is a better service I would also like to know about it.

I tried to use Road America 15 years ago when my battery went out. Being in a small town they had no luck finding a competent tow company. The college kid they sent had a small utility trailer and thought I had a Honda Rebel vs the Ultra I had. What a bunch of chit that experience was. Never again!

I now have AAA and last year when I needed a tow they were exceptional. They will pay for tow up to 100 miles and to wherever you want - not just the nearest H-D dealer.
