Clutch rebuild at 32,000 miles
« on: March 09, 2015, 02:28:44 PM »

I have a 2011 CVO Roadglide Ultra that I upgraded Cams and replaced the header pipe and baffles with Fullsac and then had a custom map built on a Dyno. I travel to states with a lot of mountains where I enjoy riding switch backs. Last year I was in California and road mountains for ten days. I noticed that on the way back, I had some clutch slippage that got progressively worse as the riding season went on. Over this winter, I ended up replacing the steel and friction discs. This was covered by my extended warranty. Admittedly, I do engine brake coming into the severe curves and I do ride in the friction zone when doing slow speed maneuvering. I use Redline synthetic Primary oil.

I noticed that Harley had a kit (37000026) performance slip assistant. I was told by the factory that is not a direct retro-fit to my 2011 and that it only helps clutch wear when using engine breaking, not riding in the friction zone.

Before I got this CVO, I have never had to rebuild a cable activated clutch, only adjust it periodically which is not an option with this hydraulic clutch. I plan on doing a lot of switchback riding this year. My extended warranty is pretty close to running out. I am wondering if this has to be rebuilt again, am I better served going to a Barnett clutch kit? What to you experienced wrenches think?

Thanks

I don't have any clutch issues on my 2011 FLTRUSE.
I'm looking at this upgrade for my clutch system which may interest you. It's about $800.

BTW I have 45K miles, full sac, Stage lll set up.

The only time you need a clutch on a motorbike is when you start driving, change gears and stop. If you use your clutch for slow speed driving you need to upgrade your driving skills.
Even in switchbacks I don't use my clutch. Don't need to if the driving lines are right.
Good luck!

CVOSE, check out Ride Like A Pro. it is a class that teaches police style rideing techniques which include clutch Friction Zone slow speed manuvers. This helps with moving an 900lbs bike around tight spots and parking lots where momentum is not helping the bike stay up right. I beleave this is what the OP was refering to.
I have taken this class and it helped me greatly improve my skills and riding beyond what i knew about handling and riding
Smkblwr.
Oldrocker, I ride the same, friction zone, engine breaking etc. Mine feels like it is slipping the longer or the hotter the bike gets. I am going to try changing and flushing the clutch res and lines.  I beleave the slip assistant is the same thing that is in my Vrod. It only slips when down gearing/engine braking. I helps prevent rear tire from locking up or sliding when down gearing on my Vrod.

I find that changing the fluid and bleeding the CVO Hydraulic Clutch from time to time, will give a noticeable improvement.
