How well does Klock Werks Work ???
« on: March 10, 2015, 04:15:29 AM »

Currently my 2012 FLHTCUSE7 has the stock windshield and I am considering a new tinted windshield for both better looks and better performance, I've looked at several different models including the HD unit, I am looking for some advice from fellow Forum members who run the Klock Werks unit, as to the size you bought and whether the dark tint or regular smoke tint is best. I am open to other suggestions, but the Klock Werks You Tube video that he puts out is fairly convincing as to the performance of the KW product. Thanks in advance for the advice. Come on SPRING !!!!!!

I always buy windvest.   I use the 9" dark smoke on my 12 sesg3.  I'm 6'3".  Works great for me.   Stuart.

I'm 5'11 and use a 6.5 Klock Werks on my Ultra. Works great for me. The biggest advantage I gained is it provides the same wind protection as the stock shield but I look over the top edge.  My eyes are about 2 to 3 inches above the top edge.  I get a tiny bit of buffeting at higher speeds ( 80 to 100 MPH ) I sat on the same bike with a 8.5 Klock Werks shield and it was the same height as the stock shield. the stock one was the worst height for me, the top edge was right in my sight line. Very distracting.  I also bought the totally blacked out one as looking through the curves of the transparent shield will drive you crazy. Everything is distorted and funky looking, it's like looking through a magnifying glass in the middle of your shield.  Cheers.

I had a clear 8.5" and a dark 6.5" and wasn't a huge fan. As mentioned above looking through the clear shield distorted my view.

I bought a 8" Dark Freedom Shield with the re curve for my 2011 CVO SG and loved it. FWIW.

I have the 6.5 on my Street Glide and a 8.5 on my Ultra, both smoked in color. They are made to look over not through. As said the bends will distort your vision. As far as working, both work as advertised. I get very little buffeting.

6.5 KW for 40K miles.  very happy with the 6.5.  The 8.5 is too tall.  I like looking over the shield.  I am 6'.

Thanks to all Forum members who provide an opinion on the KW product which I am still considering.

How about the Windvest product, any comments about that windscreen ?

Being about 5'11", sounds like the 6.5" or the 8.5" windscreen would be about right for me. The tough part of this decision is the issue with the visible vision distortion, which knowing myself, will probably drive me nuts !!! The other big issue is light or dark smoked ? I think the dark looks best, but will it be a real pain in the butt during dusk or after dark riding ?

I wish I could try a few different windscreens out before I have to purchase one, do any of the manufacturers allow us to try before we buy their product ?

Lot of your questions can be answered here on choosing a shield. FYI Clearview makes a great shield too and customer service is good. You can test one of their shields and return it if you don't remove protective film on the shield.
http://www.clearviewshields.com/blog/choosing-correct-shield-height/

Also you can't go just by overall height to find a shield since you may have a long or short torso.(that is why you see people mention inseam so you get an idea if they are long legged etc.

14" Freedom Shield here...I'm 6'2 and I see over the top just perfect...No distortion with this shield and wind deflection is much better than stock...Do not remove the plastic and you can return if your not happy with it...customer service is second to none with these guys too.

I have a 6.5 and 8.5 smoke that I use on my 2005 SEEG. Use the 8.5 on long trips, like week long trips, can look thru it. Use the 6.5 for every day use. Look over it.  5' 7. Love them , very little buffering. Smoke behind it with no problem.

I have a Klock Werks for my '15 CVORG. I had issues with the shield vibrating and even a bird chirp like noise at idle. Drove me nuts. I talked to the Klock Werks guy at Destination Daytona at Bike Week and he told me that the stock seal is a problem and that they almost always tightened the shield too much. That turned out to be incorrect. I played with it a lot when I returned home and figured out 2 things that I had to address. On the RG, one of the screws on the top(back) of the fairing is a bit too long and bottoms out(or hits something) before actually clamping the shield. And that the shield is only held in place by the 2 screws on each side and there is no outer seal, just space. Also, the KW shield is ever so slightly thinner than the stock shield, making the screw problem more of a problem and the shield a lot more flimsy, especially given it is only held in 2 spots on each side. I took some flat automotive door seal material and fashioned outer seals. This not only took up enough space to alleviate the screw length issue, but also stiffened it up, no more vibration or bird sounds.

I do like the shield. I got the dark one which looks better, and promotes looking out further ahead as you are supposed to be doing. Also, the air outside the envelope is much less turbulent than with the stock shield. I can stick my head up out of the envelope and still get little to no buffeting.

Now, I just have to get brave enough to remove that stupid KW emblem in the middle of the shield. Anyone do that? Does it come off as easy as it looks and without leaving a mess?
