Heated Grips not Hot?
« on: March 14, 2015, 11:53:24 AM »

Anyone have issues with OEM heated grips not getting hot enough.  While they do have warmth I can not detect a difference between settings 1 or 6.  A friend claims he can not even ride with setting 6 because it is way to hot.

I measured mind with a radiant thermometer and seemed to max out on #6 at 150F in a 40F garage.

I agree that #2 gets pretty hot.  That said, the controller is definitely not proportional.  #1 is warm, #2 is fairly hot, and everything above is just a hair hotter.

I love them, three differant sets on three differant bikes. all worked the same. Three is most I can stand, usually 2 or below for me.

I had some Harley flame heated grips on a fatboy fitted by the dealer and you could barely feel the heat with a thick glove, my cvo ultra on the other hand works great, It seems that the Harley grips with mainly rubber on work the best, The Harley flame heated grips are mainly metal & plastic and this appears not to be such a good conductor.

Hmmm this is on a 2015 RGU CVO so I guess I should have a talk with the dealership.  I am sure they will tell me they are working so there is nothing to fix.  These grips do have a fair amount of chrome so that could be part of the issue.  Any other 15 RGU CVO owners like to report on how hot their heated grips get.  I road the other day in 50 degree weather with riding gloves on setting 6 and never felt HOT.

I have a 15 SERGU with just over 8500 miles on it.  The grips get very warm, or maybe hot.  Usually 2 is as hot as I can stand even in 40 degree weather, most the time 1 is plenty hot.  Rode it one morning at 27 degrees and still never had them over 3 and my hands griping them were hot, the side to the wind were a bit cool.  So if my grips continue to get hotter after 3, I do not think I could keep my hands on them.

I wouldn't accept them as adequate if they only get warm. Mine were the same as you describe and I had them replaced under warranty. Now they are like other's described here. At a setting of 3, after 15 minutes they are too hot. I run them mostly at 1 1/2 to 2.

I have the 2014 Limited and I can't stand anything over two. One is great on a normal day but I did turn it up to two when I was riding in January. These grips are chromed but get consistently warm. When I had the recall work done the mechanic turned them up to five or six for his test ride and I about cooked my hands!

The quality of HD heated grips was really bad on the '06 models, but they started to improve some after that. While this might be one of the occasional bad apples that gets through any quality control system, the '15 SERGU I tested at the dealer never got hot even on 6.  The '15 Limited I rode right afterward was burning my hands through gloves on 3.  So it would be worth it to persuade the dealer to replace them.

I have two buddies that have 2015 CVO Road Glide Ultras. Both of them say that there grips are plnty hot on around a 3 setting or so. I feel you probably have a defective pair.

Well as predicted the Stealer was no help.  Took the 2015 RGU CVO in and stated that the heated grips did not get hot and that I could not tell a difference between the 1 thru 6 setting.  They took the bike in the back for 20 minutes and come back and say grips are within the limits with a reading 139 degrees at the 6 setting.  I did not agree with their conclusion and questions what they had to say with no change in their attitude.  Now I remember why I do all of my own services.  I can't stand having these guys touch my bike.  Anyone know if it is true that there is an acceptable  heat range for these grips?

I checked the 2011 electrical diagnostic, touring, and SE supplement manuals; no listing for temperatures, just continuity and voltage drop tests.  Don't know if newer models have max/min temperature guidelines.  Wish I could be of more help.
