What helmet headset works best for you?
« on: January 05, 2007, 12:11:39 AM »

I installed the HD helmet headsed that came with my Ultra and then quickly removed it. The headset ear speakers were just too tight to be comfortable in the helmet. What has worked for you? Voice communications with my passenger would be much more effective than getting a tap on the back for who knows what. Sound from the headsets should be better than the speakers turned up over the road noise at highway speeds.

Check out the J&M headsets...I have their Nolan N102 helmet with those installed and they are night and day from the HD units.  Intercom works better/easier (VOX is easier to use).  Wish I had not wasted my money on the extra HD unit... :(

I have used the HD sets since day one as the sales guy threw in a second one as part of the deal.  I am not satisfied with the volume or the sound quality.

These things are not cheap so I want to buy the right ones next time.... [smiley=oops.gif]

Another vote for J&M.  Quality is excellent.  I ordered a Nolan helmet with the headset installed, then my wife wanted one for her helmet and the local Honda dealer is a J&M dealer. They installed it free, but it's a piece of cake to do yourself if necessary.

I got the J&M headset for my wife's helmet.  Excellent quality and sound.  If I wasn't so cheap, I'd take the HD set out of my helmet and put J&M's in too.  But I only use the headsets for Intercom/CB/Navigation Voice, so audio quality is not of a major concern when only dealing with voice.  However, I have listened to music on the J&M's and they, by far, surpass the HD sets, in audio quality.  If you get the ported version, they have very good bass for the size of the speakers.

Yea, if you're going for the J&M's, get their best set..the ported ones.  I'm not saying that they sound like Bose Stereo Headsets, but the bass is decent for purposes of riding.  The bass gets drowned out at highway speeds anyway...it's just an inherent problem with the frequency.  The HD unit sounds like a tin can and a string by comparison. ;)

http://www.jmcorp.com/Arai-Clampless.htm

I have used this 3/4 setup for the last Five years and it works very well on both my Goldwing and my Cvo. The helmet has a half cord making it easier to unhook. The lower cord stays on the bike or can be locked in the tour pack. The lower cord is different for the Honda if you have two rides you will need a different lower cord only.

I have the J&M Speakers for music that way when we are at speeds above 70mph  I can switch to headsets and we can ear and talk as if we are in a cage.

I choose to wear a Hat- (3/4) Some like a Full face (I) Don't some like a pie pan and some like a hankie choose what suits you as whatever you choose to wear when you get onto ride.  That's what you will be wearing when you get knocked off

The reason ours are White is because it reflects -HEAT- We had Black before to match the bikes However it would cook your head in summer - white is better (not as much heat build up) and it can be seen (only if someone is looking) :)

After extensive research I have rendered my decision. I'm going w/ the Nolan & BT Iinterface. Now I just have to decide which comes first, the helmet or the pipes?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I think the pipes & dyno are first on the list. AJ

Not to try and be judgemental here, but I hope you made that decision based on the fact that you already have a perfectly good helmet to use until you get the new one.  IMHO if you don't have a helmet, there is no choice in what you get first....the helmet.  But then again, I'm a firm believer in them because one definitely saved my life when I got t-boned by a pickup truck.   The pipes are cool, but when it comes down to the wire, they aren't going to potentially save your life.  I currently have five helmets (can never have enough of them  ;) ), 1/2 (two of them), 3/4 (two of them also) and a full face, and all DOT or Snell approved.  Sorry to preach AJ, I'm sure you have a perfectly good helmet already and the Nolan will be just adding to your collection.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=soapbox.gif]

Hey Red! Not to worry. I've got a brand new HD DOT 1/2 that I wear all (ok 90%) of the time. I promise to wear it more often. AJ

ps Pix is this afternoon going from Sav HD to Golden Isle HD

J&M without question.  They are the best I've found.
