Front end noise.
« on: January 05, 2007, 05:40:11 AM »

Has anyone experienced a front end noise on their 07, specifically a clank anytime you hit a bump? My dealer has had the bike for over a week and the only thing that they have come up with so far is that it could be the floating rotors.

I haven't heard anything on mine.  Has yours always done this or did it start after a specific number of miles?

The "floating" rotors from HD are a constant and recurring problem.  Ask your dealer to pull the rotors and check for freeplay at the rivets.  You'll find one or more that are sloppy and causing the noise that you describe.  BTW, don't let them talk you into them "crimping" the rivets to take out the play as it is a very short term fix.

It has made this noise from the first day I picked it up, any input would be appreciated because they still have not resolved the issue.

serrk3,

They need to check the basics, like loose attaching bolts for things like the fender and calipers, steering head bearings for proper adjustment, etc.  Another possibility, make sure both forks actually have oil (yup, there have been cases of bikes delivered with no fork oil) at the proper level.

SPIDERMAN had a similar question in this thread: http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1163358229/0

I asked him for an update as no post since Nov. or after he serviced.  Also, referred him to this thread.  His bike is new as well.

I had this problem with my Heritage. I resolved it eventually by putting in heavy fork oil - no problems after that and the bike seemed to handle better.

As Jerry says sometimes the fork oil levels just ain't right.

a lot of people had the clunk noise on different bikes. i had it on my fxstd. it was resolved by adjusting the neck bearings (tightening) certain road conditions or bumps would cause it make a loud clunk. you could feel it in the bars too-read your service manual [smiley=banana.gif] another thing is that hd doesnt grease the neck bearings -go buy a tube of the hd spec neck bearing grease(isnt supposed to drip when hot) it will take at least half the tube before grease will show at bottom

If the basics are in order, I would vote to check and or refill the front forks. Low fork oil levels will result in an obnoxious clunk when the forks are worked aggressively.
