Cam for a 103 with 110 heads???
« on: March 19, 2015, 09:08:51 PM »

Hi new to the board.
Long story short...my buddy has a 2012 street glide. 103.
SE 11.1s. SE 110 heads. SE255 cam. Borezilla 2/1. Stock TB. Thunder max.
Doesn't like the way it runs. (I hav no experience with Harley's. I do race jap bikes in landspeed, also race bb fords,)
Just looking at it and talking to woods, head hoggers, tman...not a good combo.???
While he is deciding what to do, and riding season here, I thought a better cam might help???
Looking at the wood 777 or 888???
Tman 590???

Any recommendations?

Thank you

Welcome.
At 11:1 I wouldn't like the way a 103 with 255's runs/starts either. Have the heads been shaved? Piston dome volume? .030" HG? need more info.

the 255`s in a 103" 11.1 compression with 110 heads is a real ass backwards build.first you've got very low end tq cams, with big port, big valve heads, and compression is WAY too high for the 255`s.figure out what your looking for as far as a low end- mid range build,or a high rpm build.if its the first (low-mid),get rid of the 110 heads

Agreed.
That's why I'm asking for a recommendation for the current set up. A cam that will work with the 103, 110 heads.
I asked him what kind of power band he wants. He needs to figure this out.
In the mean time, I think a better cam grind may help his current configuration.

SE 11.1 pistons# 21928-08a
The heads come from the SE 110 stage 1 kit. #27501-10a
The cams are from the same kit.
The heads were not shaved.
All he could tell me was "Harley gaskets"

A volume check of the actual compression was not done.
I think this was slapped together on a weekend with some beers.

I was hoping to get some feedback from someone who may be having some good results from a particular cam grind for a similar set up.

Thanks for the help.

Any recommendations?

Put a Tman 590 in it or if you prefer Harley SE, then the SE259

Thank you.

ccp is 230. (not sure how accurate the gauge is)

Guessing with +15 dome, deck, 255 cams, 95cc combustion chamber, .050 HG, etc...
10.5-11.1 is in the ball park.???

I thought the Boarzilla was better for 113 and larger and the Fat Cat is better for 110 :nixweiss:

S&S 585 worked killer in my 103 Stage 4 with MVA heads and 10.5:1, which I believe is the same as the 110 heads. Dynoed at 124/121 and my buddy that just biught the bike can not stop ranting of how the bike just kicks everyones ass. If he didnt do a Timkin upgrade and weld and balance the crank, it wont matter because it will grenade in a relatively short time.

At 11.0 cr, a cam that'll rip that, will be a Wood TW-9B-6.
If you changed the o/a gear ratio to at/near 3:37, to lesson the load on the engine during wind-up, then a Wood 8 may be a viable option as well.
Sorry, no photo's............ :)

Thank you donvito for your reply. Very interesting. I had a recommendation of the Rivas s&s Rocket 584 cams??? I will look at the 585.

Scott, thank you as well. I will look at the cams that you recommended, can you elaborate on the benefits?

Broad torque curve with the ability to have a good "strike" off the bottom as well.
Gearing changes on most any powersports vehicle can make a large difference.

On Saturday I spoke to Mr. Wood about your recommendation. And he agreed with you. He also thought his new TW 999 with a little less lift and 2° of advance would make a good option.
Will I need springs for the tw9b6? Any ptv or valve interference during overlap?
Btw he paid you a compliment. Thought I would pass that along.

I looked at the baker 30t and chain. 700rpm difference. They recommended a billet clutch basket as well.

****Ps I should add that the SE110 heads are as they came out of the box. Are they capable of handling these big cams?****

Endless...lol

Thanks
