Hurt my scoot tonight
« on: March 22, 2015, 03:45:05 AM »

So I put 1000 miles on in the last 2 days ran great till a 1/2 mile from home. After hours of well over 80 mph interstate travel. Just around the corner from home I realized something was wrong. Down on power with a fair amount of lifter ticking.
As I get off it out in the shop I can feel by the exhaust in the front cyl is not smooth however I believe it to be fireing just not like normall.  It's missing

New S&S hl2t and adj pushrods done 6000 miles ago.
I have never been happy with the box of rocks sound after lifter instaLl but like many others was tool they all rattle just ride it.

Thoughts?
Thanks guys Steve C

Have you checked to see if your pushrods backed off?

Never heard S&S lifters with limiters rattle, UNLESS they weren't set up properly from the start.  :-[

Haven't got to check anything yet it was mid ire when I got home.  I think I'm gonna trailer it down to my Indy's shop as he put the lifters in.

If you can get it back to the shop who fitted them, that sounds like by far the best course of action. It's clearly sick, so let them see it 'as is'. I hope its nothing too serious.

IF you cannot find anything pull the ex off and look at the  EX guides. The early CVO heads had a  large amount of issues with the ex guides. I would not be shocked if you find part of the guide missing. They will break chunks off and the valve tried to stick and will run rough. Just delt with that very thing.

I hope that its only a push rod adjustment but easy to pull a ex and check.

The guide issue was semi-lack of correct press fit/lean condition from the Moco(to squeak past EPA)causing the guide to migrate on occasion, which is amplified by installing a set of pipes, w/o addressing the already lean condition.
The "chunks" as refered to is a result of guide dropping coming in contact with the valve tulip.

They would pull the guides. I have seen it many times. Usually they start with seizing the valve in the guide. My take on the cause:
Heat and excessive oil migrating down the guide causing coking. After they seize sure they will pull out.

Super-heated environment causing the guide ID to shrink grabbing the stem, and/or incorrect stem/guide fit out of the gate.............

Well they start with a nominal .0022 clearance. The program heads have similar clearance but the valve seals are the significant improvement. Harleys current black seals work very well and keep the oil out, no more seizing.
