? about a tool
« on: March 30, 2015, 03:08:06 AM »

Does anyone make a 36mm 6 point box-end wrench (like a combo wrench, not a reg. socket) on one end with a square hole to plug in a 1/2" drive on the opposite end? Just thinking ahead for when I need a new back tire and don't want to disturb my exhaust when removing the nut and torquing it back down. Is the axle nut still 36mm on the 14 ultras?

(Fixed this to clear any confusion to what I'm after).

Thanks, but that's not what I meant ... I have the socket already. I'm talking about like a combo wrench with a 6 point 36mm on one end with a square hole for 1'2" drive on the other end to put my torque wrench into.

If there is no such tool to be had I guess I could always use a crescent to hold the nut and use the socket on the left side instead, but I don't like to do it that way ... prefer turning the nut instead of the whole axle/bolt. My sole purpose of the tool I'm looking for is to be able to do this without screwing with my muffler/heat shield when removing/installing the back tire.

Exactly what I'm looking for, only a longer version.

I use a tool I bought at Dennis Kirk years ago that was made exactly for what you want to do.  It's a Kastar 36mm rear axle nut wrench, part number 9636.  I'm not sure if they still carry it.

Rather than a 6 point fixed head like your example, this one has a 12 point ratcheting head for the axle nut and a square drive hole about 4" from the axle centerline on the handle.  The overall tool length is 12", you use the regular handle to get the nut snug, then attach your torque wrench and finish the job.  Having the thin ratcheting head makes the job much easier than your example would be.

Another thought just popped into my mind.  The tool I have was designed for the older models with the 3.5" mufflers and the narrow wheels and tires.  I have no idea if it would work on a late model with 4.0" mufflers and much wider tires and wheels.

Jerry, thanks and Dennis Kirk still has it .... almost 80 bucks made by Lang Tools, same part # you gave me. I like the ratchet head, but hate it's a 12 point.

MrSurly, thanks ... that's what I'm looking for and $20.00 makes it even better.

The example (although used) I showed I think was about $18.00 and is actually an axle nut wrench for VW & Porsche made by K-D Tools, part #2377. I will be going with one of these last two ... no ratchet head, but I like the six point much better.

I would suggest trying to find one just like it but with the 1/2" drive hole a little further away. I find this one just a little too close for the purpose. It certainly works, but a little more room would help.

Just a reminder for those that may not have used this type of wrench and a torque wrench.
The TW needs to be 90 degrees to the tool for the the TW to be accurate.

Anything other then 90 degrees requires calculations for the actual torque applied (will be higher then what TW reads or is set at)
