Exhaust gasket opinion needed
« on: April 02, 2015, 09:16:56 AM »

I run a D&D Boss Fat Cat and developed a small exhaust leak.  I tightened the headers up and it seemed to go away but just decided to replace the gaskets anyway.  Talked with D&D and they recommended the HD SE gaskets because they are flat.  I had a pair of these gaskets laying around and will use them if you guy's think they will work.  The reason I'm posting is the gaskets I took out are or seem to be thicker.  These are from J&P part number 4400280.

Opinions??

The SE gaskets will work.  These gaskets were recommended by the header manufacturer when I changed pipes on my old bike.  I seem to recall that since the SE gasket is smaller, that when compressed, it's less likely to partially obstruct the exhaust...or may I just dreamt that.

I don't have an SE gasket to compare these to.  But the gaskets I pulled out didn't look like they were interfering with exhaust flow other than the rear cylinder gasket was slightly oblong and very thin in one side.  I did have a small leak there.

These thinner (or what appears thinner to me) gaskets may work better due to the fact that they will probably stay put while jockeying the header in.  Just not sure if they have the crush I need to get the pipe to seal???

I have used a cooper ring type from JP with very good success with my D&D on my  03 road king. These do not restrict at all. Also used a crushable type once that a local shop handled, can't find them anymore. My D&D has a flat flange not a tapered one.

2006ULTRA I just noticed you live in Iowa lol. And you aren't too far from some good riding, although I prefer riding the Mississippi north of Sabula vs. the southern portion.  :2vrolijk_21:

The best riding I know of is NE Iowa.  We go up there a couple times a year.  Mainly McGreggor and then cross over in to Wisconsin a ride around that area for a couple days.  There are some nice river roads along the Mis.  Not familiar with the Sabula?

Sabula is the only "island" in Iowa. It's right across the river from Savannah, IL

Nice bed and breakfast there named Castle. Owner is Sharon, great lady.

Been to Savannah a few times.  If you get back up that way head north up to Galena.  Get real pretty up there.

I'll have to check out Sabula sometime.

I've been up and down both sides from Minnesota and Wisconsin to Iowa and Illinois. Been through Galena several times. Love eating at Dirty Gurt's :)

Sabula is just a tiny little town on an island. You can literally walk the whole town. It has a neat old railroad bridge over the mighty Miss. It made a good start and finish spot for us and we really like the Castle B&B, especially Sharon's personality and breakfast!

Have used these on a Thunderheader, Supertrapp, and a V&H Pro Pipe, never a leak.

Installed the pipe tonight and sounds good.  I heat cycled it once and checked TQ at 120 inch pounds.  Going for a ride tomorrow and check them again.

I didn't know about the Cometic's or I would have went that route.  I use them a lot on the Hot Rod's.
