Quiet baffles for Rinehart Crossbacks ?
« on: April 03, 2015, 06:20:36 PM »

I have a 2010 Softail Convertible FLSTSE and it has Rinehart Crossbacks on it.

I love the look of the pipes but the sound isn't what I would like. The pipes are a little too loud for my taste and a little raspy for lack of a better word. I have looked and searched everyplace I know but I cant seem to find any quiet(er) baffles for them.
I'm looking for a solution short of changing the pipes for something else.
Does anyone have any ideas?
TIA
Larry

If you can remove the baffles from the mufflers, you can wrap them with fiberglass (or ceramic kiln blanket) insulation.  The more layers of insulation, the more sound dampening.  Tie the insulation on with something that can stand up to the heat, such as wire.  Then re-install the baffles with a screw through the side of the muffler to retain the baffle.

thanks for the reply!!!

I can get the baffles out just fine but zero or near zero clearance between baffle and pipe so no way to fit any packing around the baffle and get it back in.
I guess my options are to keep the pipes or replace with something that I can get quieter baffles for..
thanks anyways...:)

Sorry to hear there's no space to wrap the baffles, as that's probably the best way to reduce loudness and rasp.

If you still have (or can get cheaply) the stock CVO mufflers, you can remove the baffles and drill a few extra holes to increase the volume, and use some packing to reduce the rasp.  I did this on my CVO Softail Springer, which has nice sound quality and about 15% more volume than stock.

Something I don't recommend:  I tried a set of the Big City Thunder QQ Thunder Monster baffles to quiet some mufflers https://www.bigcitythunder.com/, which they say reduces volume by 25% and makes the sound deeper.  IMO, the QQs provided about 10% reduction in loudness, and almost no effect on the quality of the sound.  They did help raise the torque and throttle response at low RPM.

Double Coppers , thank you for the reply and your research!!

I think I might take a chance on QQ Monster baffles and see what happens. I love the look of the Crossbacks so I want to try and make something work and get rid of some of the raspy sound...loud is ok but the rasp is annoying..
Thanks again man... :2vrolijk_09:

So true.

I hope the QQs work for you.  I didn't notice any change in sound quality with my CFRs, but they don't have any rasp to begin with.

The CFRs and the Bassani DNT are pretty loud, but the deep sound and total lack of rasp makes them tolerable (for me) in local use...just can't live with it on the 3 week trips where we're riding 10 hours a day.
