Extended Warranty
« on: April 10, 2015, 11:22:48 AM »

What options are available out there to obtain an Extended Warranty for a 13 SERK?
when I got the bike last month the subject did not come up in financing and I did not inquire,
one I did not want to add that into the deal and be financing that also but
I think to protect myself I need to look into one, just in case!

just 6500 miles on the bike but I've seen to many post about going back and forth with the dealers

I believe, that all the dealer has to do is inspect the bike to make sure it is sound now.  May involve a leak down test or others, but if they sold you the bike it should be simple.

Will the dealer kick it out if it has a trailer hitch and or altered exhaust. By the way both were done at a Harley dealer and I have the receipts from previous owner.

What range in price should I look for in a 5 year plus wheel and tire.

Depends on how honest the dealership is.  Anyone in the business worth two cents knows CNA will not cover a bike with a trailer hitch, and it is spelled out clearly in the actual contract.  An honest dealership would explain that up front.  Others will probably be happy to take your money and let you find out the hard way later on, if you have a claim.

As Jerry has said.....depends on the dealership.  At most dealerships it will not matter.  However, if the rep. for the extended warranty wants to view the bike/issue first hand and sees the trailer hitch they will deny the claim.

It's been discussed here on this forum many times.  The Magnussen Moss warranty act, in short, says that the modification has to be directly related to failure before the warranty can be denied but that's on the factory warranty.  And even then, it may be your burden to take the MoCo to court to make them prove the failure was directly related.  I don't believe that applies to an extended warranty and maybe Jerry or somebody with more knowledge of that area can lean in on this.

JC, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 has no affect on ESP's, since they are in fact not warranties but instead are service contracts.  In this case, the contract spells out exactly what they won't cover (and the list is long), and the contract is the last word.

So if I want the warranty I need to pull the hitch and once it is in effect if I have a issue be prepared to pull the hitch again before making a claim. Sure would be tough to do on a road trip breakdown with the trailer behind the bike.

Sounds like I'm better off keeping my money and paying cash to fix issues that pop up.

ding, ding, ding.....we have a winner!

Put that money in a set-aside account and it's there if you need it.  You can mod all you want and not have to worry whether the addition of highway pegs will void the warranty when the lifters fail.... :)

Chains, I just replied to your PM regarding some of this.

I've had the rear tire replaced twice since Feb. under the extended warranty.  Trailer hitch was not an issue.  However, they (the ins. co.) like the MoCo are getting tighter on such things.  If they send out a rep. to view the failure they most likely would deny it if they see the hitch.

They are not going to come out to the side of the road and it's usually a day or two, even several days before they can even get to a dealership or qualified independent shop to view a failure unless they just happen to be at the next dealership over on that day.  My third Bushtec and it's not been an issue with me so far.  Having said that, I hope I didn't just step on my own *@^#

Maybe some of these guys can share their personal experience.

The only thing I'm going to add to this thread is that I have politely refused all offers and attempts to sell me extended service agreements for as long as they have been in existence (that's a long time), and I can count on the fingers of one hand (and have a few left over) the number of times I had a failure that would have actually been covered if I had bought the ESP.  One time was an electronic module for a clothes dryer, and the amount for the repair was about what they wanted initially for the ESP, so that one was a wash.  The other one was an intake manifold seal on a Ford Explorer.  I bought new seals for the two piece intake manifold and replaced them myself, which cost a tiny fraction of what the price was for an ESP on that product.  I can safely say I am tens of thousands of dollars to the good doing it my way, whereas the folks who just automatically sign up for every ESP they're offered are on the flipside of that statement.  Yes, a tiny percentage may have come out ahead, especially people who buy seriously flawed products like Harley's, but the vast majority come in on the losing side.  That's a fact of life, and if it wasn't then no one would be selling these insurance policies since they would be losing money as fast as Washington can print it.

I've never purchased an ESP on anything in my life - except for my '13 CVO...

That's the same for me.....no extended warranty on anything until I started riding baggers.

Interestingly.....as I was telling the  Svc. Mgr. that I had just had the rear tire replaced under warranty a couple months earlier he shared with me  "we all have extended warranty on our bikes and it's the only thing we buy extended warranty for.....there's a reason for that."  I explained that all the extended warranties I'd bought had paid for their self and on two bikes they'd paid for theirself two times over.  In this regard, I'm ahead.  But I'm not naïve enough to think that the MoCo doesn't have other ways of getting my money.  :(

I never purchased ESP, until my 2009 SEUC CVO.
.
I spent the money on a hunch....
.
Two engines rebuilds later, I was glad I bought the ESP......And then traded in the bike.....
