Transmission Whine-No scream in fifth gear.
« on: April 14, 2015, 09:50:37 PM »

Anyone have any fixes for older CVO Ultra 6 speed noise (scream) in fifth gear?  Same noise in 3 and 4 but no so loud.  Whine more appropriate in 3 and 4.

Try Redline Shockproof Heavy transmission fluid.  Won't get rid of all the whine, but might quiet it  enough to satisfy.

The early model Cruise Drive transmissions used straight cut gears for first and fifth, and helical cut gears for the rest.  Those where pretty quiet in second through fourth and in sixth, so you may have something else going on if yours is whining in second through fourth.  Inner primary bearings were a problem on the early Cruise Drive bikes, and there were some internal trans bearing issues as well.  If you are seeing early bearing issues, changing fluids isn't going to be the answer.  I'd suggest getting it checked out by someone experienced with the product.

Redline will usually help. I have also added another 12 oz to the prescribed quart and helped. Never had a leak.
