RG glare issue
« on: April 18, 2015, 01:54:03 PM »

I picked up some matte finish Tech Armor online and put it on the radio and gauges today. I'll post up later to see if it did any good. I know on my '11 SERGU the glare off the gauge pod at times is horrendous and on the '15 it isn't any better, toss in the infotainment system and it gets quite annoying.

I tried that Tech Armor on my Garmin and it seemed at first like it did some good but I dont really think it did any good. After getting the 665 replaced under warranty, I forgot about it and when I remembered I realized there wasn't any difference. I hope you have better results.

It did help a lot on the gauges and the reflection off the screen. Trouble is you still can't make out much on the screen with the sun right behind you. Guess we're all waiting on Glarestomper to make some kind of hood for these bikes  :-\

Just sent H-D Tech Support this email:

Aloha,
On my $40k+ 2015 FLTRUSE, the 6.5GT Infotainment screen is unfortunately angled upwards and reflects the sky ! I'm 6' tall ....it would be worse for shorter riders. The GLARE is bad enough in direct sunlight on a cloudless day, but the screen is completely unreadable with a bright cloudy sky. The GLARE problem is apparent to anyone who's ridden a 2015 RG.

Assuming the Infotainment screen cannot be angled downward on a Road Glide, (in summary) it should be:
1.   equipped with an anti-glare (matt finish) protective screen cover made for viewing in direct sunlight while wearing polarized sunglasses. Consider this touch screen friendly product from: http://www.nushield.com/dayvu-info ;
2.   shielded from daylight glare with a properly angled rigid plastic visor or hood (see below);

SOLUTION DETAILS:
1. The seemingly easiest solution would be to provide a touch screen friendly screen protector made for viewing GPS screens in direct sunlight while wearing polarized sunglasses! Check with NuShield (http://www.nushield.com/dayvu-info)- Best Quality Screen Protectors, a company specializing in Aircraft and Marine GPS solutions.

2. Another solution would be to shield the screen using a screen visor or hood similar in concept to image 2. I found a non-rigid temporary solution at: http://www.readymaderc.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_22_228&products_id=1601 (This is an inelegant emergency solution which is not particularly satisfying!) This sun-shade mounts to the inside of the Infotainment screen pod with a length of 1/4" wide Velcro tape and installed;

Photo 3 with hood shows a significant GLARE improvement with the sun directly overhead on a clear day (few clouds);
Photo 4 with hood shows that GLARE is still present with a bright sky on a cloudy day.

This GLARE problem is a potentially serious safety issue! See the following forum commentaries:

I've called your Tech Support folks. For reference it's under file #2437668 ......I would appreciate a response . This is my fifth Harley-Davidson and second CVO ......aside from the Infotainment screen glare and software issues ......my 2015 FLTRUSE is by far the best motorcycle I've ever had the pleasure of owning ! Let's get this issue solved and make a lot of your customers happy!

Very nicely written.

Every RG owner should call, get a case number.  Then they should also write like this.

Thanks guys. I placed an order with NuShield for: "NU068RA    NuShield for 6.5 in. diagonal screens". I specified the DayVue film which is supposed to work well in bright outdoor scenarios like with aircraft and boating applications.

As a result of working with them by providing dimensions and photos of the Infotainment 6.5 head unit, their website now has a "Harley Davidson" option for placing your order :). I'm amazed that they updated their website with the Harley option the day after I placed my order. WOW ........wish the MoCo reacted that quickly ;D!

I'm hoping this will be a good enough solution that I can remove the hood I've temporarily mounted around the screen. I'll share the results next week!

UPDATE: The new film arrived today and has been installed. As is obvious from the photo attached, there's significant improvement compared to my previous photo, but still way too much reflective glare. Granted that today is a very cloudy bright day as you might notice from the reflections on the screen :(. All in all, it's better, but I expected more ........and hope the MoCo will offer a hood visor solution ::).
