Full air rear suspension
« on: April 19, 2015, 08:38:04 PM »

Anyone running a complete air (air bag or air spring) rear suspension? Does a good quality air suspension ride better than a good spring suspension like Ohlins? Looking for the softest ride possible.

I as others on the site run a full rear air suspension. I run an air front suspension also. For me it's about the ride. Springs ride rough IMO. Riding solo most of the time I don't have enough body mass to make the springs work. For me the stock spring travel being only 3" isn't enough. I'm not knocking a quality aftermarket shock in any way, they are just to rough riding for me. The same can be said for some of the air ride suspensions on the market. A personal preference is what you here referred to as "Home made air ride". What this is is commonly found off the shelf parts and making your own air ride.

This^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Arnott Aldans IMHO are pretty harsh.  The cheaper Bilstein shocks are much better.  I am running the same homemade set-up as listed above.  Puzzled and I have done extensive research and believe for us we've come up with the best in comfort, reliability, and travel.

Here is a complete kit similar to what most are using. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251338108198?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT. You can source everything yourself for about half that if you have the time. If you go to Amazon and look up air shocks for older Corvettes it will show what most people have bought with them. Seems like there are way more people buying them for their bikes than for Corvettes! http://www.amazon.com/Monroe-MA785-Max-Air-Shock-Absorber/dp/B000C55SVE

What do you use for the home made air ride?

MA785 shocks that are re-welded, better bushings, etc....if you need help just shoot me a PM

The Monroes have 4.5" of travel also, the main reason I prefer them.  They ride good as well :orange:

I have a 2015 SGS with the HD premium rear shocks. They seem to work pretty well. The problem I'm having is when I go from solo to 2up , its a pain to adjust the shock. I go back and forth pretty often. I'm 250 pounds and my wife is 180.
My question is , would the adjustable on the fly air shock setup work well for us?

I love the home made system. I've been asked to put them on many bikes over the past two years. I order all my parts on Amazon. I also add a remote, a pressure gauge in place of the air temp. and I purchase a lid lock switch from Harley and put it in place of the acc. switch. I can get all of it for $375 the last time I ordered everything.
For the 2014s up, I fitted a digital gauge to the lift of the radio and place a toggle switch on the frame under the seat.
