Just wanted to add some fuel to the "What kind of truck" question.

Picked up my 2006 F 350 4 door 4 wheel drive Lariet Powerstroke on Feb 1 2006.

Today, almost to the day, 19 months later I rolled over 100,000 miles.

I run it hard and let it rip every chance I get.

No complaints and no problems.

Oil changes every 5K or about every month.

My next one will be another just like this one except newer!

AJ, don't be starting no chit!
Actually, it was Brian's post that that prompted me to take that picture.
I was on cruise on I-77 headed to Columbia SC today when it rolled over a 100.
Brian's picture was very cool since he was actually riding when he took it.
Mine was no big deal. Anybody can steer with their knees while they are taking a picture!

I believe that in this day and time you can't go wrong with any of the big 3.  The original post said you wanted to tow 8,000 pounds about 10% of the time.  I would recommend a 3/4 ton truck.  Half ton trucks can do it, but I don't know how well.

I currently own an '05 Dodge 2500 with the Cummins diesel.  I regularly tow an 11,000 pound load with it.  It tows it effortlessly.  I drive it daily and have never returned to the shop for a repair.  I get about 14 mpg towing the 11k load in small rolling hills and flat areas.  Unloaded I get 17-20 depending on how fast I drive.  It seems to drop about a mile per gallon for every 10mph over 60 when driving unloaded.  I usually don't drive over about 60-65 towing.  Anything you want to know about a Dodge Cummins truck can be found at www.turbodieselregister.com

I had an '03 Duramax.  It was a great truck, no problems.  I towed the exact same load.  The performance of both trucks is about equal unloaded.  The Duramax definitely did not handle the load as well as the Cummins does.  I can tell a big difference accelerating and going up hills when loaded.

I know the 6.0 powerstroke Ford had a lot of problems with injectors and they bought back several of the trucks in lemon law cases.  The '08 trucks have a new engine but it is unproven.

The Dodge Hemi gasser is a great engine, but it likes gas more than like to buy it.  The Ford gassers seem pretty thirsty too.  GM is probably the way to go if you're getting a gasser.  I know several people with 6.0 and 8.1 liter gas GMs and they're very happy with them.

As the Mrs. said a bit ago, our  :pumpkin: is the best truck ever made. It has hauled everything we have hooked up to her and everything we've thrown in her. Cruises like a dream and pulls like there is nothing back there. Only problem we have is the thing is #6 on the getting washed list at our house, and now I'm feeling guilty about cleaning her.

I am sure d00d will agree, there is no better color combination!  :2vrolijk_21:

I'll post a better pic when I get her washed up...  ::)

05 F250, 6.0 Diesel with Gale Banks turbo augmentation it is the blue truck behind the convertible serk below.
Very fast,  rides nice, will pull anything and would get decent mileage if I quit blowin coal out of it.
No issues at 50k miles just melting back tires.

What do you mean by saying "turbo augmentation" ?

Is this the banks 6 pack?
Had one on my last 6.0l   Pulled a 32 foot Donzi with it form NC to Golden Meadows Louisiana many times, not many under 80mph either. Only got 9.5 mpg at that speed.

I hate to go outside the USA on this one but take a good look at Nissan's 2500 truck. One of my sponsors let me use on one of our road trips to Jacksonville Fla, towing the 32' Donzi. Did a fine job, and fuel mileage at 70mph on Int 95 was around 8mpg. Regular driving was real close to 20mpg with nothing behind it.

The Big Hoss Bundle, six gun tuner, larger intercooler, boost tubes, intake and exhaust..Whole nine yards.
I'll squeeze 17 out of it if I drive like a nun...Average around 13, 10 pullin the 32 ft. trailer.  I think it could go mid 11's or less if I could keep it hooked up.  The acceleration from 45 to 100 is amazing.

I had the 2004 F250 with the same set up. Had problems blowing the heads, or actually cracked them, twice. Put 99,000 miles on it in less than 13 months. Spent half that time in the shop.
Debating on doing the 6 pack and exhaust only on the 2006 F350. Just a little hesitant because of the problems with the 2004 truck. Ford did make good on all repairs.

Trucks?......Depends on what you want to do with it.  If you need to pull 8K, you need at least a 3/4 ton.... a half ton or an Avalanche just ain't

If you need a "Dude Truck", any of them will do.

If you want dependability and power to "gitterdone", Dodge is the only way to go.

Totally Objective -- I have been driving 3/4 & 1 ton trucks for the last 14 years.  I have personally had two Ford PowerStrokes >> both were good trucks - I had no complaints.  Late in 03 I sold my 1999 F-350 and bought a 2004 Dodge 3500.  Trust me, the Dodge will "gitterdone".  Better on fuel - up to 21 mpg and pulls much better.

I pull a 14K toyhauler - with the Ford, I was averaging 11 mpg.  With the Dodge, I average 13.  In the mountains, the Dodge really shines >> the Ford would down-shift much more often that the Dodge.

Comfort:  In the past, Ford and Chev had Dodge beat on comfort/plushness.  Not anymore, go check out the new Dodges.

I have heard a lot about the Allison Trans. that Chev has.  Now Dodge has a 6-speed auto that seems to be bullet-proof and pulls like there is no tomorrow.  And, the Cummins engine is time tested and proven to be strong and long lasting.

I trade trucks every five years (it is a tax thing).  Unless something happens in the next year, there is no question about what I will be buying >>> Dodge.

Chip when Ole Blackie, my 97 E350 with the 7.3 hits 600,000 I will post a pic for you. Only 72,000 more to go. Maybe in 2008 :2vrolijk_21:
