To locktite or not to locktite.
« on: April 27, 2015, 09:26:53 AM »

I will be installing my new GMR Performance lifters this week, hopefully tomorrow, and wondered if I should use locktite on the bolt as I put it all back together.  I removed the rocker box covers and the rockers as well.  So should I be using locktite when I re-install everything?  And if so, what color would you all recommend?
Thanks..!!

Glen I can't answer that but an educated guess tells me yes. Better wait for one of the engine boys to chime in.

When in doubt, consult the official shop manual.  Not every fastener needs to have thread locker applied.  As long as you stick with blue, using it where it really isn't needed won't normally hurt anything, but may make it harder to disassemble next time.

Amen. I tend to just put blue on everything. We use it a lot at work without issue.

Here's another vote for blue loctite on everything at least external.  As Jesse and Jerry stated, may not be needed on it (and the shop manual would state for internal parts) but not a bad thing to do if in doubt on external "stuff".  Good stuff dat blue..... ;D

Engineer types calculate stress, torque and the like and then specify torque values and type of thread locker to be used.  Do what they say and when they say and you will be far ahead of your intuition.

I haven't had any stuff fall off that was blued on.  I like blue for everything external.

I use blue on almost all fasteners not a fan of having parts fall off.

Used Red on a mirror stem once and a year later needed to disassemble.  Had to heat that sucker up pretty hot and put some major force on it to remove.  Will not be using that again on anything not permanent.  Not had any issues with blue and use it everywhere except exhaust system.
