Error Retrieving Power Commander Map
« on: January 09, 2007, 08:55:44 PM »

That's what the software tells me.

I've got a PCIII USB, model 812-511 hooked to the new red Jester.

When I start up the PC software and attach the PC to the PC, the software appears to connect to the PC, but no Serial Number shows up, and when I click on "Get Map" I get an error at the bottom of the page that says "Error Retrieving Power Commander Map".

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chief

Chief,

Do you have either the ignition switch on or the 9V battery connected to the PC?  The PC has to be powered for it to communicate with your computer.

Just a possibility to consider.  Several years ago on a Road King I had what seemed weird Power Commander problems.  Could see the unit.  But the unit didn't always report.  Couldn't download from it (though could sometimes upload to it).  Other weirdness.  After screwing with it for a half hour one Saturday I grabbed a different data cable.  Voila...

Moral is, don't forget the simple stuff.

Check the cable for sure, also the 9V battery must be NEW. Even then they seem to be a bit tempermental with the battery. Even with the bike on but not running I have had times when it would see the unit and report the serial number but would not take a map. I pretty much always have the bike running when i load or retrieve maps now and never have problems.

Jerry,

Ignition yes, 9V no. Actually, when I plug in the unit, it is detected, although no serial num is reported, regardless of ignition switch position. Off, On or Acc all gave the same result. It sees the PC, but no serial number, and no map. The instructions say it should automatically download the map upon connecting.

I have not tried it with the bike running yet.

Thanks,

I only had the one cable last night, my phone cable is here at work. I'll try again with a different cable tonight.

Dude,

Thanks. I'll try it running tonight. Maybe that'll be the ticket. New cable, etc. Something's got to work.

Thanks for the input.

I had the same problem downloading - the bike has to be actually running if the 9v battery isn't used.

You know, it might just be my simple mind, but that type of information would be nice to have in the manual.

Thanks Dave,

I never even owned the battery adaptor.  So always futzed with my PC's with the bike running.  It's nice when some mistakes are avoided just because you never had the opportunity to make them  [smiley=drink.gif] .

You are SO right Don.  But sometimes I think I've acutally created the opportunity to screw up when none existed.   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I spoke to Dynojet today regarding the problem.

They state the PC must be "Powered up" to work, and that just turning on the ignition is not sufficient. The bike either has to be running, or the unit must be supplied power through the connection on the side.

I commented to the rep that including that gem of information in the manual would have been helpful. He tried to tell me it was, but when I asked him to tell me where it was because I had the manual printed out and in front of me. Hmmmmm, maybe it isn't in there after all.

Guess they just forgot that part.

No problem. Now I know.

Amen to that man.  Don't even want to think about how many shortcuts have led to how much extra work and dollars spent  ;D .

Got it working now. I took the 9v adapter and soldered it to a plug to hook to my Battery Tender plug on the bike to get the necessary external power needed. Works well.

The paper instructions that came with the PC clearly stated that external power was necessary. I was only reading what I found on the web, which is why I missed that all so important fact.

Now I can power it up without the bike running, and not have to have an endless supply of 9v batteries on-hand.

Chief,
B careful,  the battery adapter send 9Vdc to the unit,  if you plug the battery tender to it you're sending 14+Vdc to it...........be careful not to blo the PC's supply circuit,   you are way better to connect a 9Vdc battery than doing the way you are.......Just a thought.
