Antenna cable extension
« on: September 23, 2004, 04:12:03 PM »

Just installed a Chopped tour pak and was wondering what people have done to extend the antenna cable to the tour pak. Harley has no parts that will extend the length of the factory antenna cable. They will however sell you a complete ket that replaces the existing cable. That's not a good solution if the tour pak is only on for a few weeks a year. You'll have four extra feet of cable dangling when you use the factory antenna mount. I know some people have purchased the hidden antenna but I'm not sure if I want to go that route yet.

You can get rid of the external antenna completely if you like. There are a couple of options to do that.  Also the 05 has two antenna mounts, one when the pizza box is on and one that you use with it off.

Two places you can get a hidden antenna are Tune Trapper http://www.ecshylites.com/page/page/761353.htm

and Dakota

YO,  here is what I did.  HD makes an antenna relocation kit but it cost $99.95.  The kit is on page 503 of the parts and accy. book (2004).  Inside the kit is and cable adapter ( have the part number but have to dig for it, dealer can find it if you ask).  Since my tour pak already had the antenna cable and mount installed, I just  purchased the adapter for about $20.  What I do when I put the tour pak on is to remove the antenna and then unscrew the cable from the exsisting bracket.  Screw on the adapter to the cable and then attach the cable from the tour pak antenna.  Attach the antenna to the tour pak.  I use a plastic wire wrap or tie to secure the cable under the tour pak so it does not rattle or rub the saddle bag or fender.  This solution cost me far less than the $99 but is about 3 minutes of work each time you switch between the pack and or backrest.  Sounds funny after spending $30k tryin to save a couple bucks here and there.  I guess its a matter of how much you plan on taking on and off the tour pak and if ya want to switch the cable and antenna.  Take note:  if you decide on this solution beware the tiny allen head screws are very easy to loose that secure the antenna.  Good Luck!

I would recommend getting the tune trapper.  I installed it on my bike about a month and a half ago and have been very happy with it.  I had the dakota digital installed previously and didn't like it at all.

Hello again, the tune trapper sounds and looks like the best solution and does not cost a bunch.  For you guys that have used it, I take it you purchased the one that is 24" long and the cable splits out the middle?  the TT2c model?  If so you just unplug the exsiting cable and install this one inside the fairing correct?  Did you attach the antena inside the fairing or just lay it inside?  How bout some details?  Thanks and great solution!

Yes I bought the 24" "T" shaped one where the cable attaches in the middle then I just opened the fairing up and zip tied it acrossed the very top of the fairing (it just fits), I bought the one with the 2 foot cable (not the 6 foot cable). You can buy this cheaper from ebay than the tune trapper website.

Just curious, does the weather band still function with the tune trapper?
Thanks

On my bike I still get the weather band with the tune trapper.  I was never able to get it with the digital dakota antenna.  I installed it similarly to the ofender.  I did not zip tie it, i just used the adhesive backing on the center and mounted to the top of either the speedo or tach (I can't remember which one).  Next time I have my fairing off I will take a picture.

Yes weather band works fine, this is not an electronic replacement (like the dakota that needs a power source) it is just a really high quaility antenna (read the specs from their website) I have found it to be better in all aspects than the stock whip!!! [smiley=laugh.gif]

Has anybody tried using a Y shaped motorola adapter so that you have both the Tune Trapper in front and your HD antenna in rear connected at the same time?  Just wondering if this would boost reception even further.  Using the short stubby rubber HD rear antenna.

thanks,

Elvis, that's beyond my level of expertise, but I will tell you that I ride w/ a guy who uses the small rubber antenna on the rear like you are using and he receives just as good as I do w/ the tall whip.  For what it's worth.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
