Fuel Mileage
« on: May 07, 2015, 02:03:36 PM »

I bought my 10 cvo new in 2010 and I noticed something strange and wanted to know if anyone else has ran into it. Regarding fuel mileage I notice that sometimes I get on my bike and its getting good mileage I can make a stop somewhere not fuel stop get off the bike get back on start it and the fuel mileage sucks. Its very sporadic on what the fuel mileage is.

I have the same bike with 73,000 miles on it. I get the same thing while traveling. The wind has something to do with it and the quality of the gas. I usually go about 180 on the freeway before the light comes on. I run about 75 miles per hour most of the time. 42-47 is what I get.

I've done cams and headwork along with A/C and pipes and the wife and I get 43-47 on trips and when I ride solo I get as low as 34  :P

On trips, sometimes it's the gas.  Some areas have Ethanol in the gas with lowers the mpg. In Canada I get much better mileage, due to the good gas.

Since you mention getting good mileage then stopping but not adding fuel, then starting out again and the mileage is not as good, I have to assume you are basing your statement on something other than actually measuring fuel mileage.  If you're using the miles-to-empty reading or the actual gauge reading to approximate mileage,  then I can understand what you're seeing.  Neither the gauges nor the miles-to-empty readouts are very accurate, especially in the first half of the tank versus the last half.  If you want to know for sure, you need to measure actual gallons used and miles ridden.

Yeah, those BSRs take up so much space, there's no room to flex the wrist.   :huepfenlol2:

Twisting the wrist makes it good.   :)

Agree with Jerry about the fuel gauge and Miles Remaining.  Mine always drops faster during the second "half" of the tank.

Im not going by the fuel remaining however that is what brought it to my attention. Full tank says I got 220 miles remaining then ride 1 mile shut the bike off and it restart it and it says 150 miles remaining. So I started checking the mileage when its above 200  miles on a full tank I ride and get maybe 38 mpg. Fuel up and I might get the same mileage but when I start off it never goes to 200 miles remaining I check the mileage on that tank and its usually between 25 to 27 mpg.

The miles remaining indicator is erratic. It doesn't change at the same rate even when you are going at the same speed. However, there is a easy way. Fill your bike, run it till you have actually ridden about 100 miles, fill it up again to the same level and note the amount of gas you pumped e.g. 2.5 gallons. Simple math should give you your gas mileage, 100/2.5.

My 12 SERK stock except fullsac and tune, would get 43 to 48 depending on wind and gas when running interstate at 75mph.

My 13 SERK built motor, injectors, throttle body, head work, pistons and cam, fullsac exhaust and tune 46 to 52 mpg on the interstate at 75.

My 15 SERGU stock except fullsac and tune get 40 to 44 depending on wind and gas when running interstate at 75 mph.

Doc Tuned the 13 and 15.  The 15 is about 100 pounds heavier than the 13.  I do not ride with a passenger very often at all.

On trips I usually travel about 75 to 80.  By myself about 45 or so. 2 up about 39.  In town about 39.

Ethanol will bring you  mileage down.   I am getting about 39 on the hwy and 34 in town.   I am a good sized fella and I am sure between my weight and happy hand will never get good mileage. smileage is a whole different thing.

I used to read this mileage threads and always think my bike had a issue as I was always in the low to mid 30's. Went on a all day ride with a group and got low 40's. All about the "right wrist" i finally figured out

Regardless of what your gage is saying (we've known for years that HD has the worst gages.....don't look at your speedometer vs. what you gps is reading.....a whole nother topic) that in one tank full you're ge3tting 38 mpg (miles divided by gallons it took to fill the tank) and another tank you're getting 25-27 mpg?

Just a wild guess but it's probably a combination of things.....wind, gas quality, roads, riding style, etc. etc. etc.  As for the gage itself.....some have had them replaced under warranty.  But then you'll be told "they all do that"  and they do.  Doesn't make it right.....jusayinzall
