Recently I sold my 06 FLHTCUSE to a friend of mine.  It was in need of rear brakes and I had a set of pads laying around so I gave them to him yesterday.

He called me tonight and said good thing it needed brakes as the weld was busted on both sides of the bracket the hitch was mounted to.  Never felt a thing pulling the trailer, can't even begin to know when they broke or which one broke first.

Anyone else seen this in the past?

Makes me a little nervous now.

Well it didn't hurt anything mechanical but I can tell you at least on this bike the attachment area is to weak to support the extra strain.  As far as voiding warranties its funny the bike I have now has a hitch dealer installed and I have the original receipt. So I know at least one dealer that would over look the hitch issue.

This support bracket was used at least through the '07 my as my cuse2 has the same part - 53422-97.  Mine looks to be fine and I notice that my Bushtec hitch mounts using the two 5/16-18 x 7/8 torx pan head screws (item # 2 on the attached pic, p/n3655A) that go through the support brackets (item # 17) on the pic attached.  This hitch came from my '99 ultra classic so it may not be exactly like the one on your '06 cuse.  In any case I know the moco had several tour pak support brackets fail due to cracking  and it happened on my '99.  But it was the tube itself that cracked not the bracket.  I'm thinking that the stress from the tour pak rather than the trailer is the main culprit - but I could be wrong.

You could be right, after all the bike did not come with a king tour pack it had the leather smaller one.  Anyway I sure am glad he caught it. I picked up a replacement part today and we are tig welding the bracket all the way around.  It actually tore at the puddle weld. Should be good to go tonight.

Here's the new part with extra weld. No wonder they break when you dig out the silicone Harley puts on to quite the squeaks there is a .06 to .08 gap allowing the plate to flex. Silicone is not going to fix a poor design/ manufacturing issue.
