Power lock issues
« on: May 19, 2015, 03:54:01 PM »

Anyone ever have any issues with these? Bike is my 15 CVORGU.

On a road trip this past weekend I got rained on and then the bike had to sit out over night. It rained pretty hard that night. In the morning when I turned on the ignition I heard the bags latch. Tried to unlock with the button on the dash, nothing. Tried fob, nothing. Turned off the ignition and then the fob worked fine.

So basically when bike is on bags will automatically lock and won't unlock. With bike off fob works as it should.

I figure the switches have shorted and a trip to the dealer will happen tomorrow as I'm resting up today.

Anyone?

I think your diagnosis is right on the money.  And obviously Harley's are still not water proof, even though motorcycles are often ridden in rain and occasionally get washed as well.  Did the steering lock also activate, or just the saddlebag locks?  You might want to just unplug the connections at the bags and blow out any water before making a trip to the dealer.  If that turns out to be the problem, once the connections are clean and dry, use a liberal amount of dielectric grease and reconnect.

Forks lock also included in the problem. Basically everything that button locks, locked when powered on.

It's under warranty so I'll just let the dealer mess with it. Otherwise I would take your suggestion and try and fix it.

I'm not real electrical smart.........what confuses me is why the fob would work but not the switches. If I'm thinking right the connections at the bags would be fine but the switches themselves may be the culprit. Correct?

Yup.  If all the locks operate with the ignition off using the fob, but the locks do not work with the dash button with the bike powered up, the issue would definitely appear to be with the switch.  That's why I asked if it was just the bags, or all the locks.

Now if it's just water in the switch, it will probably dry out and start working fine just as soon as you turn it over to the dealership for them to check it out. ;D  That's how things normally work for most of us.

Haha. Ain't that the truth.

Was hoping they'd dry out already but does not seem to be the case. Of course, I'll check them in the morning before I ride to the dealer. Lol

Make sure you post up the results. If it is water getting in there, I'll make sure I take my cover with me on vacation next month.

Definitely.

My cover is still in the shrink wrap in the hall closet. Haha. Not much good there.

I'm pretty positive it happened in the over night rain while parked. I did ride a couple hundred miles in a steady rain but things worked just fine then.

Thanks for the insight Jerry.

I have been experiencing the issue on occasion with the fork locks and never really thought about a potential water issue.  I will definitely pay more attention to this now.

I take a 1/2 cover with me on trips. Keeps the gauges and seat dry. Not too worried about the rest of it and don't want to take uP too much space with a full cover.

Well the plot thickens.

Took it to the dealer and had to make an appointment to leave it in a few weeks. They said they were too busy to look at it now. Fine. Talked him into ordering the switches in the dash so they were here when I go back. He said they were a sealed unit.

No big deal really, bike still runs and I can get in the bags with the fob so I can wait.

Got home and pulled the bags off so I could clean the whole bike after the trip. After putting them back on I turned the switch on and didn't hear the locks activate. Tried the switch on the bike and it worked several times then stopped again. Turned bike off and back on and same issue with it locking everything. Unplugged the bags again and re connected, now it works as it should.

Weird. I'm gonna go get some dielectric grease for those plugs and see if it continues to work properly. I'll keep the service appointment for now but hopefully I have the problem figured out.

Gotta love them Harley dealers - NOT!  "We can get to you in a few weeks."  That's pretty much the typical response I get from our local dealer.  Couple years ago I did have an appointment and left my bike for whatever I was having done - don't recall.  Anyway after an unreasonable amount of time and no communication I phoned to learn that the assigned tech had left for vacation the day I took my bike in.  Now this was in summer at the height of riding season so I was dumbfounded.  I know seasonal businesses are difficult to manage and I know everyone wants their vacation time.  But I've foregone and rescheduled many vacations over the years due to workload variances.  It is just part of the territory.  This along with pizz poor sloppy and tardy workmanship is why I absolutely HATE to take my bike to any dealer for service.

I am definitely not a fan of taking my bike to the dealer. I really don't like to leave it at all. I prefer to wait if I have to let them do something.
With this being a new bike and me being new to the CVO stuff I figured I'd let them figure this problem out. Now, after fiddling with it I MAY have accidentally fixed it. I'm not gonna cancel the appointment until I'm 100% sure it's good.

I do share your sentiment tho. I prefer to do my own stuff or find a good independent. Being new to this area the independent search has been slow and pretty non-productive.

Since I took the bags off to give the bike a gook cleaning the locks have been working fine. Maybe they just need time to get good and dried out?

Rained all day yesterday so I left her in the garage. Today went and got some dielectric grease and applied it to the saddle bag connectors. Then went inside and called the dealer and canceled the appointment. If it reoccurs I'll bite the bullet and let them look at it.

For now it seems to be fixed.

I've had issues with my auto locks not working on my 2015 Road Glide Ultra CVO. My bike has never been out in the rain or wet since purchased. I traded in my 2011 Road Glide Ultra CVO and it never had any problems with the auto locks. 2 days ago I auto locked my bags in the garage on my way to our local HOG meeting. Once I got there in sunny weather, I tried to unlock the bags with the key fob. They wouldn't unlock!  I tried the consol switch, no joy there either. I had to use the key manually to get into my tour trunk. Once I got home the auto lock feature began working again.

Ever since I got the 2015, the auto lock doesn't work anywhere as good as my 2011 did. I tried replacing the batteries but it made no difference. I had my dealer twice reprogrammed all the fobs and it's still a hit or miss with them working. I have to move around the bike for it to reconize the fob at times. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the receiver.

I haven't run into any of this yet but it seems like you damn near have to be on top of the bike for them to work. A little longer range would be nice.
