Roar when leaning left or right - Rear Wheel -
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:55:10 AM »

Recently I have noticed a "roar" or "buzz" when leaning the bike in either direction.  I dont recall hearing this before.  I know that I read somewhere that the Elite 3 tires make a lot of noise when cornering so I was wondering if its just that.  If I get up to speed and kill the engine in neutral, and weave, I can hear it well, and feel it in the floorboards.  But when riding upright its smooth and quiet.  I am not hearing a metal grinding sound and in all fairness, in my mind it does feel like a bearing, but I wanted to get some input from you guys...
Ideas?
Bike now has 11k miles on it.  2007 SERK.
Thanks

Bet it's the tires, mine does the same thing. Some call it the chicken strips, the unworn parts of the tread both sides of center may be cupping, makes a whirring noise when it contacts the road.

I was thinking about that too.  But what I noticed was just even the slightest tilt either way, and I hear and feel this.  Even at very low rolling speed.

Only assuming here, but one would think a bearing would roar all the time..no?

Pretty common with that mileage on a rear. Some are more noisy that others.
I think the '14 and up rear tire wear is better than the earlier models, at least from my experience.
Our local dealer says "they all do that, unless they don't"........yep.......direct quote! LOL

I just went out and looked at both tires a little better.  Both have some cupping. Not really bad, but it's there.  Still have plenty of wear left though.  I wouldn't be surprised if these are the original tires lol...hate the thought of trying to find a matching replacement.  Not a big fan of most Dunlop tires..

The factory Dunlops are notorious for cupping, at least the rear was on my old RGU ... it howled really bad like you explained unless you were going straight down the highway. Somebody here turned me on to trying the Michelin Commander II and I never looked back .... rode like a completely different bike after having that put on.

Once I wear out the junk Dunlops on this bike I'm going with Michelin again. A little over 5k miles and this rear is starting to cup also. I do try to stay off the center of the tire when possible and hit lots of twisties to make it wear even, but it isn't really helping much ... no howling yet, but pretty soon I'll be treated with that noise again.

I wonder if a little over or under 40 psi would help? :nixweiss:

I have had this sound on my 2010 when the rear tire started to square off, but your bike is a 2007 and has the smaller tire.  Check the belt guard to see if its loose, check the torque on the shocks, and the wheel bearing.

My bike only had 3000 miles on it when I bought it.  I too have the roar or buzzing when ever I would coast and weave back and forth.  I checked the tire pressure and repeated the test and it was still there, only off by a pound.  I took it to the dealer and had them check it out but they said they could not hear or feel it.  It is there.   who ever checked the bike sure must not be in tune with how a bike should ride.  They said it might be cupping so I said show it to me. I had cupping issues with my old Raodstar and Royalstar so I definitely know what cupping is and how to spot it.  They could not show me any areas where there was cupping.  The said that there was not a problem.   I am sure it is either the wheel bearing or the floating rotor causing it.  I now have 7500 miles on it but it is still the same amount of buzzing.  I was hoping it would get worse so they would fix it under ESP.  I still have a year left on the ESP and will be watching this.

2010 SESG here.  My rear tire did the samething, starting about 15k. Replaced rear and the roaring went away.  BTW, I'd experience a noticable vibration in the handlebars when going thru a turn...that went away too when I changed the front.

With mine, I feel that "rumbling" in the floorboards with just the slightest lean.  And of course its worse with a passenger.  I tightened up the belt awhile back and it seemed to be humming the whole time.  I loosened it up some and it stopped doing it all the time and back to only in turns.  Belt still feels loose to me but I dont have a gauge.  I need to get me a swingarm lift so I can get the back wheel off and check the bearing for sure.  But its likely just the tires.
Thanks
