Indie Shops Vs. Harley Parts
« on: May 26, 2015, 04:25:34 PM »

Is MoCo making it hard for independent shops to get stock HD parts?  A riding buddy told me his indie can't get stock parts, so they have to use only aftermarket pieces.

Only aftermarket ? Yes they probably make more ordering from Drag. I suspect indies stand in line at the Harley counter just like you and I, but can't get ? Sounds like a line to me. :-\

Called an indy shop a few bikes back needing a rotor. It was priced $30 HIGHER than the dealer.  ::)

I don't know for sure, but I seem to remember this subject coming up last year when Harley was doing all sorts of other stuff like busting dealers for selling out of their market area, advertising discounted prices, selling parts to folks in other countries, etc.  A comment was made at that time about them also making a change that removed incentives for dealers to wholesale parts to independent shops.  Perhaps that is what happened, or perhaps the independent shop is jerking people around, or perhaps the local dealer is just being an azz and refuses to sell parts to the independent.  Hard to tell these days.

The situation is at least that bad re: Harley dealers selling at a discount to independent shops. They leave themselves open to big fines.  >:(

Yep, that's the way it is nowadays...

The MoCo is cutting the Indys off at the knees with the new parts policy. No discount and having to stand in line / or send somebody to stand in line, no net$/30day accounts, makes sourcing parts an expensive proposition.

Charging $30. for a (guessing?) $200. Stator, the Indy is loosing $$ with the new policy, The time / expense to acquire the part, go to / from Dealer, stand in line, pay the Dealer(short term finance your part), probably with sales tax, lost revenue from running parts , not fixing bikes... Then what if you get a defective nib part?? no potential for finger pointing there...

The aftermarket could really shoot themselves in the foot by getting greedy (being the only show in town) with the Indys / Customers. They have to "leave enough meat on the bone" to attract the quality business person (Indy) to make the investment, and downstream, the Customer, to use an Indy / aftermarket parts over a Dealer/ HD parts...

It gets worse.  Was talking to a tech at local $tealer today.  New policy:  with aftermarket parts that are defective, labor to R&R not covered by the dealer under warranty, so customer pays twice.  So as Heat said, easy for tech to say "defective part," and certainly to his benefit to say that instead of "I installed it wrong."

Maybe where you live but not in the State of Maryland. There is a warranty period for the part and either a 30 day or 45 labor warranty. So if the part is defective within that time period it will cost the dealer.

I have a good friend that owns an Indy Shop and has been in business for 20 years. He has been CUT OFF by all of the Dealers he bought from. If the Dealer gets caught selling to an Indy Shop they will get fines or even worse lose their Dealership. The Moco has really cracked down trying to protect their Dealers. I got this info today!!!! He is not happy at all!!!!

This is for after-market (Non-HD) parts?  Wish we had that.
