If you want to be both quick and fast, buy a Hayabusa.  Stock off the showroom floor it would probably lap your Breakout on the first lap of a one mile track.  Does that make it a better bike for the way you ride?  Does that automatically make what you ride a POS?  Who really gives a chit?

Jerry ;)

I hear you Jerry. But (!!) can you look this cool (CVO Breakout):

Walking away from this (CVO(!) Busa)?:

This thread is hilarious!  Harley guys talkin bout how much faster a Goldwing is.  :huepfenlol2:

Camco, the Harleys may be faster 0-60 mph.....but 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile they'll be looking at the broad azz of a Goldwing.  Might want to go test ride a wing.

On second thought.....you better not.   Truth be known....a few years back I made the mistake of test riding a wing.....big mistake.  Long story short, it kind of turned out like when I was young..traded a 58 vette for a 49 chevy pickup.....simply because the truck was faster.  Got on that wing, two up and I was amazed at how quick it shot up to 125 with two of us....still had half the on ramp to go before I'd be on the freeway.  Very fast and very smooth.  On a wing, 120 mph feels more like 70 mph....just really smooth.  I only had it a few months....just wasn't the same and even though the road dogs never gave me any chit....I just couldn't hang on a wing.  That's impulse buying.  I've done that a time or two.   :P

My Brother rides a wing, I ride a 2010 CVO Ultra, out riding around we never have raced...we just don't care about that aspect. Oh, I have ran other folks, won some and lost some.  I just don't run him, not sure how that would turn out he is not a real aggressive rider. He is always the first to comment when we pull up to a stop light "you sure get a lot of nods and waves from the cagers". He just grins and says I wonder why they don't wave to me?
My Brother loves his wing, I love my Harley, both have two wheels but that's about all they have in common.

Even a slow mid sized bike can scare you if you get stupid on it.
My Bike is fast enough for me. More than fast enough to get killed on. Mine is not the fastest Harley I ever had but it is the most trustworthy fast Harley I ever had

As JC stated who cares anyway. But really we all do, just because we know that our bikes suffer in performance area some, we all would like them to run like the $$$ we spent and spend on them.

Ever since I did a few engine mods on my wife's bike and you can hear the cam lope (carb) seems like every time out somebody is asking her to race. Her standard answer is pretty much "it isn't all eye candy and I really don't want to ruin your day for you so thanks all the same". Makes me laugh all the time.  :bananarock:

LOL! If you want to ride the best sport touring bike ever made, get one of the late model FJR's. 140 HP completely stock, 640 LB wet. I had to get rid of my last one in 2004 because I kept having to pull over for my friends on Harleys to catchup. I love my Harleys, don't get me wrong but its not for state of the art performance.

To each his own,
My riding buddy sold his Ducati Desmosedici but, kept his '07 CVO bagger.
Yeah, 230HP (377lbs dry) may be just a little too much for the street!
Duh.

Interesting phenomenon concerning the Goldwing... They've always been fairly respected among most hardcore HD guys I've known, myself included.   I think that says a lot.   I had the pleasure of riding a 2010 for a 700 mile trip.  The smooth delivery of power is very impressive.  As mentioned, the top speed seems endless.

My biggest issue, and I can't believe it's not mentioned more, is it feels so d@mn cramped.   I tried everything, but even the highway pegs were odd, in that the placement of the power plant had my legs open like I was in a gynecologist table.   Is the wing set up on purpose for small folks?  Maybe my experience was unique... But coming off a Roadking, I couldn't believe how cramped I was... And I'm only 6 feet tall... Oh, and a lack of a 6th gear is criminal.  Your experiences may vary.

Have to love the guys with stage III or IV mods bragging about beating a stock GW, or someone riding a much lighter Softail wanting to know if his bike can outrun a GW.  Comparing apples to donuts, and as fired00d so aptly posted, what difference does it make?

You may beat a GW over the eighth or even quarter mile thanks to the power to weight ratios, assuming your a good drag race type rider because the rider makes a big difference too, but keep on going and see who gets to the end of the one or five or ten mile marks first.  Then keep going flat out for another fifty miles and see who gets there first without white knuckles and without a lot of drama.

It's not just you, Jake.  I agree with the speed/power/smoothness/handling of the 1800.  I bought one when the 1800 first came out (2001) and really enjoyed it.  That is until I took it on a 3,600 mile trip out west and the very same things you mention (cramped) were why I only kept it 5 months.  I had back to back 900 plus days in the saddle coming home and my knees were killing me.  No matter where/how I sat in the saddle, I could not get comfortable for my legs/knees.  Pegs (as you stated) did not help.  Great bike, respect the heck out of it but not for me (I'm 5'6", by the way).

I have to toss in my 2 cents on this thread. WTF ?
Who races a Goldwing ? Who cares ?
I mean isn't that kinda like when Larry Holmes beat up on Muhummed Ali at the end of Ali's long career ?
I admit, everyonce in awhile it's nice to catch a kid on a crotch rocket off guard if you're running a HiPo H-D. Screamin Beagle dusted a kid out in Valley Central in San Diego one day and we stopped at a gass station not far down the road. The kid was like WTF dude ? Beags says to him "beware fat old bastards riding baggers "  hahahahaha.
OK, here's another story to go along with JC and Jerry (GRC)  Bobby Moreland builds some pretty mean and nasty Harley-Davidsons. He's showed up at many a drag strip and beat the locals handily on what appears to be a mostly stock FXR. He's built a twin engine shovelhead for Bonneville. But when it came time to try for the 200mph club he bought a Hyabusa and went to work on the aerodynamics. Got his ticket punched at 212mph officially having done one run at 222. So for me, that says it all.

That's the comment I hear most often from Harley people when you can get them to talk seriously about the Honda versus Harley thing.  And as a guy who rode Japanese bikes for over 30 years before trying a Harley, I can say that I think a big part of it is in what you're used to.  I started out my Harley experience with a Dyna, so at least that had mid controls that somewhat approximated the setup on my Japanese bikes.  But then I went to an Electra Glide, and at first I hated the riding position.  It reminded me of sitting in a chair, as opposed to a bike.  It took much of the first summer on that bike to start to feel comfortable and normal.  And once I did get used to it, I found like many other people have mentioned that even though having the feet forward should make you feel less cramped, the rest of the bike didn't necessarily work with that theme.  I'm only 5'8" tall and feel cramped with a passenger on the back for instance.  I truly believe part of the difficulty with the transition from Harley to Honda or vice versa also involves the height of the seat.  Harley is real big on the low seat height and feet flat on the ground theme, whereas my Japanese bikes with a higher seat required tip toes at stops but also allowed more vertical room between the footpegs and the seat, so I didn't feel cramped.  Sadly, there really isn't a one size fits all.

Junk is what we call a wing in the Mountain State.  How many Japanese guys are 6' 2", 240 lbs?  There endeth the lesson.  :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: Later--HUBBARD

Our Jap Adv bike is faster than our modified 110
Our RT is faster than a stock 110
Our 2 stroke dirt bike is probably faster 0-60 than all of them
A bicycle could most likely outrun our Ural

Still, there's nothing like cruising down the open road on the HD
