Bike died!
« on: May 30, 2015, 01:25:23 AM »

I'm sitting on the roadside waiting for a tow truck at 10 PM.  Just now I was driving down the street, and out of nowhere, my bike lost power.  This just happened suddenly without any sputtering or hesitation.  Lost all electrical power as if a switch had been turned off!  I was approaching a red light, slowing down, and the rear wheel just locked from the engine compression when the electricity disappeared.  Bike is completely without electrical power.  There were no engine codes and the voltmeter had been reading around 14 volts.

I checked fuses and battery connections as well as I could at roadside,  and everything seemed fine.  Only odd things I can see are speedo and tach are frozen at 18 mph and 1200 rpm.

Does anybody have a clue as to what might have happened?  Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Maybe failed battery.  Could be due to broken plate.

I would also check the voltage regulator when you get her back in. That or as jk mentioned the battery.  You checked fuses and connections. Dang sorry this happened to you. I despise lectrical issues...so hard to track down. Good luck.

Sorry Ken.  (Did I get that right).  If it's not the main fuse then it sounds like the battery shorted out.

Close, Greg.  It's Dan!  :)

After waiting for hours in the burning desert, finally getting towed in the middle of the night, dropping off my bike in an open, unprotected parking lot, and spending the night in a sleazy hotel surrounded by tweekers and crackheads, all is good with the world again.  A wire from the voltage regulator was rubbing on an engine mount, wore through, and grounded out.  Just needed to replace the wire and main fuse.  Phew!  Guess checking fuses in the dark doesn't lend itself to accuracy!

A relay went on mine.  Had no spark and no fuel pump. You say you have no elec at all and the tachometer and odometer are frozen could be a relay failed holding the two gauges. Hope it's a small fix for you. Will be looking for your fix post. Good luck

Just read your post good for you it got sorted quick. So much elec on these bikes nothing can be ruled out :2vrolijk_21:

Man that sucks when that happens. glad you figured it out, me and the wife were riding up to Bear mountain in MT a few years ago and the stator decided to go out on the ultra, luckily I do watch my gages and the volts were dropping so we turned around and it was down hill from there to Cody where the only motorcycle repair shop around for miles had it repaired in two days.

Got one for you.  My cruise switch was broken but still managed to function.  Probably when previous owner had dealer put 12 inch monkey bars on.  I have put close to 2,000 miles on the bike in less than 4 weeks it ran great. Today while going down the road the cruise switch popped out, I caught it and while running down the road tried to stick it back in.  Got it in and bike imeaditely died. Two or more mile from home, no phone no glasses just a short ride. Pushed it over half way home when a guy stopped and let me use his phone to call my wife.  As she pulled up a guy in a Ford dually with a short little trailer pulled up and offer to haul me home.  4 of us got it on the trailer and home I went. Checked all fuses, battery everything good still won't start and has no turn signals plus red key lit up on speedometer. Headlight taillight running lights and radio all work.  Looks like I am off to the dealer with it tomorrow, needed a cruise switch anyway. I must have shorted something out shoving the brass switch  arm back in.

Don,

Thank you for the inspiration to go back out and stick something else in a different hole  :huepfenlol2:.  This time I put on my glasses and found a blown fuse.  Darn things all looked good with no glasses on yesterday.  I figured once I cooled down from my Olympic bike push and got a decent nights sleep things would shape up in the morning.  Damn glad they did.  Now I still need to get a cruise switch.  Anyone ever solder the wires to the old ones opposed to pulling new ones through the bars?

I did and it is a bit of a pain. I replaced a pair of the switches on the left bar and one of the switches came with a bunch of wire...but the other with just about 4".  The biggest difficulty is that once you are done with the splicing, you now have to make it all fit inside the housing.

FIRST: Have a camera ready and get pics of how the wires were routed and secured inside the housings BEFORE you pull them out.
The first time, you'll reach the point of wishing that you had made each of your splices much much smaller/ shorter.
Keep that in mind from the start and make them as compact as you possibly can.
If your replacement switch comes with the long leads, you'll be way ahead of the game to pull the wires through the bars and splice in the fairing area.
Pulling the wires is not difficult and you don't have to pull the bars to do it.

Looked inside housing, you are right not much room. I think pulling through bars is the way to go. Thanks.
